<a href="http://www.hp-expo.com/uk/eng/products/jornada/928.html">http://www.hp-expo.com/uk/eng/products/jornada/928.html</a><br /><br />It may come as no surprise that I've been impressed with the HP Jornada 928 for a while now. I held one for a short period of time during Möbius Europe 2002, and I really liked what I saw. <br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hp928wda.jpg" /><br /><br />For me, it was bad news when I learned that the 928 was rumored to be killed due to the HP/Compaq merger, and HP deciding to go iPAQ all the way. But then...Arne Hess of <a href="http://www.ppcw.net/stories.php?story=02/07/05/9356578">PPCW.NET</a> wrote that he learned that the 928 would be released after all, but that it would only be released in a few markets. Again I feared that I might miss the boat, as The Netherlands is not exactly the frontline when it comes to new PDAs. Happily, this will not be the case. Yesterday I learned that I will receive a WDA for testing and reviewing purposes. If the WDA lives up to my high expectations after I've used it for a while you will be able to read about it on this site at some point.<br /><br />Until then, you can read <a href="http://www.hp-expo.com/uk/eng/products/PDF/928.pdf">the specs</a> in a .pdf file, or <a href="http://www.hp-expo.com/uk/eng/products/jornada/928/tour/">do a little tour</a> on the HP UK site, including <a href="http://www.hp-expo.com/uk/eng/products/jornada/928/tour/demo.asp">an interactive demo</a>.<br /><br />There is also a little <a href="http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/review/2/2/1646.html">review on ZDNet</a>, where the WDA does pretty well. The review is not very detailed when it comes to battery life, speed of the processor, etc., but it might give you a good idea about the device. It should be available right now through Vodafone stores in the UK, and according to the review other carriers might follow eventually.

I have heard different reports on the TI OMAP 710 processor. Is there any firm word on how this thing performs?

This model was supposedly designed by the Singapore HP team and was going to be used by the police or something there. Is there any word of availability in Asia? If not, I can pick one up in the UK but what is this thing going to cost without a Vodaphone contract?

Now I am in a desperate final race to see if there are any more integrated GSM/PPC units coming out as my Nokia 8890 is starting to go buggy. I can deal with not having an xscale processor as long as the OMAP 710 is as fast as the existing Strongarm. I doubt I can wait until November now for even the Taiwan MiTAC.

zucchini: that page contains nice pictures of the 928, and it didn't go unnoticed: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2363 .

:D I have just bought a 928 from vodaphone in England and its great! The phone/Pocket PC integration is superb an thevoice recognition really works; no need to put voice tags to entries its a true speach interpreter. You can even speach dial numbers!

The processor is fine in fact I think its faster than the ipaq 3870 of my friends and certainly nowhere near as buggy.

What makes this product even better is the price. I paid £460 without contract ( I believe this is around $680 US) Their contract upgrade price is £370 ($550). Stangely their new contract price is £390!

A great product which knock the socks off ipaqs & O2's xda!

It won't - Europe release only, then the product will quietly be buried.

Will that prevent some of us importing the device and attempting to connect to our own providers?

(to answer my own question probably yes. Just conjecture, but it probably doesn't meet FCC requirements, and hasn't been given the federal ok.)

Yes, because this unit doesn't use the 1900 band used for GSM networks in the USA. It's 900 / 1800 dual band only.

Is there any information on HP's schedule for the rest of Europe? I'm already planning for a short trip to a Vodafone store in London...

JORNADA 928 PROBLEMS

I have the jornada 928 and i like it but when I use the speakerphone people dont hear me very well. They hear a lot of background noise.

Also the Fonix Voice dialer doesnt work very well. Even when I say simple numbers - I think its the mic.

Also the removable battery doesnt connect very well. It sometimes connecst and at times looses connection.

I tried contacting HP customer support but they werent very helpful. I dont think the customer support guys even know or understand the Jornada 928.

Bottom line is that I am stuck with a promising product from a company that is doing very little to overcome my frustration of spending lots of money purchasing and shipping a product that has problems. HP need to imrove their support on high tech products.

I have bought a 928 on Vodafone and can report the following problems:

Unit turns itself on all the time - doesn't seem to be any reason for this - have disabled everything software wise and it doesn't seem to make any difference. This obviously makes the batteries wear out very quickly.

I also installed the tv remote controller software included on the accompanying cd. As soon as you press any of the buttons the whole unit locks up requiring a reset.

I contacted hp and the only help they could give is to give it a hard reset!? (which didn't work)

Although in many ways this is a great product, I feel that it has been rush released without proper testing or training for the HP staff.

Has anybody had similar problems, or I have I just got a duff unit?

Tried to send this as a private message but it just seemed to stay in the outbox and not get sent.

The microphone problem is not too bad - I think you have to expect a bit
of an echo with the speakerphone. Everybody understands me on the speakerphone and when using handheld/hands free it is fine.
Saying that, the voicedial application is worse than useless - it doesn't understand a word I say!

I know what you mean about the battery - the design sucks. I don't know if it's that which causes the pda to switch on all the time - I suppose it could be. I have the cover off and have disabled all the auto cover settings, but when I turn it off it soon turns itself on again - does yours do this?

I wonder if you could do me a favour. On the product cd in the OEM/APPS/Handango folder is the software for the tv remote. Could you install it on yours and see if it locks up when you press any of the buttons on the screen. You don't have to program it or anything, just use one of the standard configurations. If it does lock up you can easily remove it.

HP support do not seem to be up to speed on this product at all. Contacting them has proven to be a waste of time so far.

Please respond

I tried the TV Remote program and yes the system locks up requireing a soft boot.

I had a problem with my GSM refusing to make calls forcing me to make a hard boot. this happend to me twice.

I also had a problem of the SMS suddenly not recieving messages though it would send. Again I had to hard boot the machine and start all over.

The Jornada now seems stable - dont know why. But the Fonix voice dial deffinetly does not recognize almost nothing. I did notice that there is American voice in the Fonix folders - but no instruction on how to activate that over the British English.

Finally, the issue with the speaker phone is not the echo but the background noise as if I were speaking from a distance in windy day. The Nokia Communicator or even the Panasonic GSMs have no problem with speaker phone features.

Otherwise, I use it because I hate carrying a GSM and a PPC. But HP should show more customer care and respond to us on these issues. I have sent HP customer service a copy of this link, so I know that they are reading this stuff but sadly no call from them yet.
