View Full Version : I bestow upon thee the rank of...

Jason Dunn

I added two new ranks assigned when you reach a certain posting level, which had the net result of bumping down the categories - now when you hit 50 posts (instead of 100), you'll become a "Pocket PC Ponderer". The board just got so much classier... <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif" />

Don't worry; we won't overlook any "theorist's" comments. After all, wasn't Einstein a theorist? And today we're still discovering just how right he was with (some of) his theories.

Oh boy...this triggered something deep in my psyche. How about this for an "analysis": Apple is an elite brand foisted on the public with slick marketing campaigns built up on the lies that "the great intellectuals of our time" would have been using Macs. The higher prices and styling appeals to people who think they're better than others, people who feel wealth and status are an end unto themselves. Better educated? Perhaps, because in the US higher education is insanely expensive. But does that related to anything "real"? No.

Or something like that. ;-)

I was thinking about that, but everything I came up with was mildly insulting. I'm open to suggestions. The best one I could come up with was:

"Hi. I'm new here."

Jason is a little more creative then whole numbers. PPC Thinker was like 403 or something. He does that so we don't quite know when we will hit that next mark. Good idea...then you can't just make a post to say you are at 300 or 400 to get yourself there.

Another good feature to have (not sure if it is in the board software) is to have a post ranking so that other readers can actually rank a post. This way, a meaningless post counts less than a really good, well thought out post. These rankings are fun, but may create less buzz and more mumbling....

Janak Parekh
07-16-2002, 07:41 PM
Jonno,

That may be true, but it introduces its own host of problems. Do you read Slashdot? "Karma whoring" is a Slashdot-ism that happens more often than not -- tailoring posts that appeal to "moderators" or "rankers" so that they get high scores. :?

Actually, kuro5hin.org is a better model, but as it demonstrates, a comprehensive ranking system is incredibly complicated.

--bdj

p.s. Jason, this message took about 15-20 seconds to post. Don't know if it's because of the DNS troubles, or just general slowness...

Didn't Wes have that? I don't remember it getting used to much though... It would be cool if it worked well, but if people don't use it, then the meaningless posts will just get ranked.

Normal posts get a point.. but really good posts that get flagged as good get extra points... maybe something that counts towards a different ranking system. It would help filter out the fluff if implemented well. I think what happened in the 'stress test' is a good example of posting gone awry.

I have ZERO clue, but I just got 60+ as well. I'm talking to our host about it now - we seem to have a seriously flaky SMTP server or something. Notifications have never worked properly, but this really takes the cake...
