http://www.compaq.com/support/files/handhelds/us/download/15068.html

It appears that Compaq has released End User Update 2, or EUU2. I say appears because they refer to EUU1 quite a bit and have even titled it that, but there are several mentions of EUU2 in the readme file. The list of fixes includes:

• Server Sync cannot synchronize if a specific meeting is in Inbox or Calendar.
• FTP User/Password authentication default overrides user “anon.”
• Pocket Internet Explorer sometimes does not send Submit button Name/value information.
• Pocket Internet Explorer is slow to load a pages with JScript®.
• IMAP4 service stops responding when attempting to download e-mail with certain attachments.
• Media Player Full Screen playback breaks on second played clip.
• System .WAV sound files have extra noise at the end

There are no enhancements. The requirement is simply any iPAQ, except the 3900 series, that has the Pocket PC 2002 OS on it. My guess is this would work on any Pocket PC 2002 device, but you are on your own there. Since this also includes EUU1 in it, if you have a device without EUU1, you should be safe in bypassing EUU1.

One word of caution. If you have a 3800 iPAQ and have not installed the new ROM - 2.2 or 1.2 depending on your device - and you later install that ROM, you will need to reinstall EUU2.

It appears that Compaq has released End User Update 2, or EUU2.

Cool. Although the page mixes EUU1 and 2 quite a bit. Very sloppily edited page.

Wow!

An 8mb download to get rid of the scratchy noise at the end of the synching sound

HP has released it as well, but for the Jornada 565/568 only:

The files from HP and Compaq are binary identical and I installed the Compaq one also on an @migo. So it SEEMS to be fine to go with other hardware, but I would recommend waiting for the releases from the respective OEM.

Very sloppy page indeed. They talk whole the time about EUU1 version 2.0, they never use 'EUUU2'. Very confusing imo ;-)

The list of models doesn't include the 3900. Does this imply that the updates are already incorporated into it?

You are right. I'll edit the original. I don't know what that means.

I have an HP567, and can confirm that the HP download will not take. It says that the firmware is not installed.... The Compaq one DOES work. Go figure.

I installed it and it works...

I got the HP version and installed it into my 568. The update does wonders.

I can now use Yahoo! Groups to send out replies to my egroup and use Yahoo! Mail to send out my mail via the default HTML Yahoo page.

If you like using the mobile version of Yahoo!, then you don't need this... but if you access a lot of those <Send> buttons... then I think it would be a good idea to install this update.

This may be a stupid question, bu thow do you tell if the update actually took? In asset viewer, the ROM Date is listed as 10/03/01 and the Revision is 2.14.03. I have no idea if the update was properly installed. Any thoguhts? Thanks.

Not a stupid question at all. AFAIK, there is no way to tell. With EUU1 it added a tab to ActiveSync for server sync. With this, it just fixed some bugs, so unless you had one of those bugs, you won't know. Nothing in the asset viewer is updated.

Don't know if this would be one way to tell, but look at the modification dates of some dlls in the \WINDOWS dir.

On an updated (to EEU2) iPaq 3800 I see jscript.dll was updated in 3/21/2002; cspnet.dll was updated in 3/11/2002; wininet.dll was updated on 3/21/2002.

Those are system DLLs and I would think that might give an indication.

Quick questions about Windows Media Player.

My version is 8, build 0103. Tell me what you have. I have ROM 2.20 with EUU2 installed.

I am especially curious to see what ROM 1.15/2.15 with EUU1 users have with the Windows Media RAM update posted several months ago.

Don't Panic!
07-14-2002, 04:33 AM
It's still 0103 but after installing EUU2 you can uninstall the older WMP update to free up space and still have 0103. BTW-You lose file associations when you delete the WMP update but they can easily be restored with Tallinsoft's Pocket Tweak (http://tillanosoft.com/ce/downloads.html). You also need tGetFile.dll from the same site to navigate to the Windows folder. Thanks to Gerard from PocketNow for turning me on to Pocket Tweak!

? System .WAV sound files have extra noise at the end

...

One word of caution. If you have a 3800 iPAQ and have not installed the new ROM - 2.2 or 1.2 depending on your device - and you later install that ROM, you will need to reinstall EUU2.

Given the caution above, I decided to take the plunge and do both. I upgraded my iPAQ 3870 ROM to 2.20, reinstalled some software, then applied the EUU2 updates.

With the 2.15 ROM and EUU1, I only got the extra noise at the end of ActiveSync audio notifications. Now I seem to have them at the end of reminders, too. :-(

Could it have anything to do with the fact that I lost my old reminder gong sound and am now back to one of the system ones? I am not happy.

Here's what the Compaq Web page says:

1. Currently the only method to see if this update is installed is to:
* Look for the addition of a Server tab in ActiveSync --> Tools --> Options on the iPAQ
* Start the update again on the iPAQ. A message will be displayed:

?This ROM Update is already installed??

Now if the Server tab part was just text left over from EUU1, the only official way to tell is to try to run the update again. Right after you install EUU2, copy it to your iPAQ again and try to reinstall it and see if you get that message.

I just tested this, and I did get that message.

Hi, I've been encountering problems during my ROM installation. I got the following message after I clicked on "Yes" to tell the program to start updating:

"The ROM update File \temp\rom_update\shell.xip is invalid. It will be deleted. Other updates will continue"

Then

"The ROM update File \temp\rom_update\browsing.xip is invalid. It will be deleted. Other updates will continue"

then

"The ROM update File \temp\rom_update\sync.xip is invalid. It will be deleted. Other updates will continue

then

The ROM update File \temp\rom_update\coreapps.xip is invalid. It will be deleted. Other updates will continue"

then the installation was aborted.

Anyone can help?

THanks

Wackyman, are you installing the Compaq update on a 31/36/37/3800 Pocket PC 2002 device? Won't work on a Pocket PC 2000 31/3600, and says it isn't for the 3900's.

Do you have enough room? It is 12.5MB and then unzips itself into your TEMP folder, so you need at least 25MB of storage space to do this - either that or put the CAB on a storage card and run it from there, though you still need 12-15MB for the unzipped files.

Finally, try downloading again. Your download may have been corrupted.

I think that is valid. MS put some stuff in a separate memory region that the 3600's don't have due to the 16MB ROM, even if you have one of the random 32MB ROM devices (unless you have an unofficial 3700 ROM image.)

So that XIP fails, correctly, on the 3600's. The rest work.

Quick questions about Windows Media Player.

100% confirmed. EUU2 includes the WMP RAM patch from Jan/Feb.

Also, any 3900 users here? Check out the file date of \Windows\Connmgr. If it is Jan 8, 2002, then EUU2 is built in.

 I installed the stupid EUU2 on my 3835, now the thing makes a crackling sound EVERY time there's a system .wav, as opposed to once in a while.

Stupid Compaq.

(It's my first 'thoughts post: so please excuse the lack of advanced emoticons <grin>).

I installed the EUU2 on my iPaq 3835 mostly without issue. But now I have an interesting "extra" behavior. ActiveSync makes the "connecting" sound and briefly displays the cycling arrows on the task bar every few minutes, even when my cradle is miles away! (Yes that means the iPaq is unplugged from the cradle).

Using the control panel to stop ActiveSync is the only way to get my iPaq to shut up; at least until the next sync.

Has this been discussed before or is this a new problem, sent by the MS gods, specifically to haunt me?

<Jason, your emoticons make me jealous.>

A little more information might be useful then. It may not be EUU2 related at all. I have done the following three things recently:

1) Installed EUU2. Nothing notably wrong happened during the install.
2) Sent my iPaq 3835 back to HP for the backlight fix (this went remarkably smoothly, 3 day turn around! No backlight problems yet).
3) As a result of item (2) I had to hard reset the iPaq as part of the return. Sadly, this means I had to use ActiveSync "restore" to recover all my data (I did a full back up just prior to turning the iPaq off and shipping it).

After the above steps (and a mess of ActiveSync efforts: 2 hour restore, recombine two PC partnerships, delete and recreate my pocket outlook pop accounts -- the usual song and dance) my iPaq is running fine. Except ActiveSync seems to try to connect to thin air.

Aside: about that ActiveSync restore procedure, ludicrous! I typically use my cell phone until the battery is DEAD! There's no way I'm going to buy a Pocket PC phone if I have to go through that lengthy Restore process every day. What are they thinking?!

Did HP upgrade your ROM to 2.20 by any chance? If they did, doing an Active Sync Restore may have caused problems. Just a guess....

In case someone doesn't know, you can check your ROM level on the soft reset screen or by using the Asset Viewer Version section in Settings.

If you have a laptop, do you use it until the battery dies? Do you leave the lights on in your car until the battery dies? (I mean intentionally.)

The Pocket PC is not a cell phone. I've had an iPAQ for almost a year now, and never had the batteries die so much that I lost data.

That said, I do wish they had backup batteries like the older handheld PCs did that would keep your data even if the main batteries died. (I think one Pocket PC does, but it's the exception, not the rule.) Maybe space constraints made it difficult to engineer in, but it would be nice.
