There's an auction on Ebay that advertises a HP 540 Stowaway keyboard that I'm interested in. Will this work for an Jornada 560? Or is it specifically designed only for an older Jornada? I'm worried that if I buy it, that it might not work. The box says designed for HP 540.

It will work perfectly - HP made the new 56x series compatible with the older devices. :D

As a matter of fact the 560 series comes with the Stowaway driver installed. At least on my 568. I assume the others do as well.

Great! Hopefully I win the auction! Thanks.

The driver preinstalled on the HP 560 is a little old. I hope you win the auction and if you do you should download the latest driver (version 1.6) from www.targus.com

Good luck

...but remember that the Stowaway drivers can't be loaded into the HP Flash ROM area, they need to go into main RAM.

Jason:

You're right that the drivers have to go into RAM. As far as I can tell the preinstalled driver on my Jornada 567 was in RAM anyway, because, according to instructions by Targus, the previous driver version should be deleted. I deleted the previous version and, if it were in ROM, it would not have been possible.

Not quite... :) They're in the HP SafeStore when you get the device, along with a few other applications. That's Flash ROM, but it's accessible to the user for adding/deleting.

Uhhh, I just checked. I tried installing stuff back into my HP Safe Store and all it does is load up the *.cab file into it and some extra files... not the *.exe file though.

So I still feel that it installs into RAM although you have a *.cab file int the HP Safe Store that lets it reinstall it if ever you perform a hard-reset.

What is new/changed with this version..... do people really need it?

Well, the new thing is that all Jornadas... ven the 525 and 540 series Jornadas have a hot-dockable feature that automatically activates the Keyboard. No need to manually activate it via the menu.

On my 567, I can check "hot-dockable" so that it enables this feature. Does the updated driver have any other benefits?

Which I don't like, since it 'hot docks' when I connect my GPS via serial as well :(

Hmmm. Since I don't have a GPS device so I'd never thought about that. I wonder if, with the new update, you can toggle the driver off or if it's easy to shut off to use your GPS :?:
