http://mappoint.msn.com/

You can save MapPoint maps now to your Pocket PC. The process is a bit convoluted and involves Mobile Favorites, but it does work, and is easier than creating your own by cutting and pasting into Word. If you are looking for a free alternative to Streets & Trips or GPS hardware, this is worth checking out.

I thought that adding maps to your PPC was pretty easy anyway.

I have saved a ton of maps by simply cutting out the area that you want to save and right clicking within the area. One of the choices that comes up after right clicking is saving it to your PPC. Done deal....

That's for the computer program version of MapPoint - there's now a MapPoint website that you can use to get location information, maps, driving directions, etc. similar to Mapblast and others. This is what Ed is talking about...

I know this might not be a favorite with everyone but I use AvantGo and subscribe to MapBlast and MapQuest to get the maps I need. They've always worked great for me. :D

Duh. I guess I should start reading these threads after I've had my coffee.

Ed, I went to that site and I don't see any instructions for doing what you say. I own MapPoint, but I think you're talking about doing it from their site. What has been missing from Streets and Trips and from MapPoint is the ability to download directions to a PPC, and your graphic shows them. How did you do it?

That's OK. I've written more than my fair share of threads before I've had my coffee too.

I'll fill in for my fellow Tennessean Ed here:

On MapPoint
1. Click the Maps tab
2. Click "Save to Pocket PC"
3. Follow the directions displayed

Speaking of MapPoint (the full version), is there a way to get around the 'That map would be too large for the PocketPC' (or something like that) error message when I try to save the map to my PocketPC? I have a large flash card and I want to decide what is too large.

Thanks! That's exactly what I needed. I couldn't see the link for saving to a Pocket PC on the directions tab, but once I had it create a map that link appeared.

Thanks...

This is exactly what I've been looking for! I've been wanting to get my hands on Microsoft Streets and Trips 2002 for some time now, however I only wanted it for the PocketPC version which comes with it. Up here in the Great White North (Canada) they want $60.00 for it which I think is a bit pricy just to get a PocketPC map application.

Now it's free! Woohoo! Kind of ironic though - by offering that free service on the internet, Microsoft just lost out on a sale of one of their own products.

This isn't quite like having a map program on your PPC. This gives you a static map for when you know where you're going before you leave your desktop, which is often just great.
Pocket Streets, in contrast, can have multiple 3MB maps databases loaded (each of which can cover a major metro area, and includes points of interest info), and you can look up an address where ever you are, as well as link from contact book addresses and a GPS unit if you have it. Pocket Streets, however, does not generate turn-by-turn driving directions.
I got Streets and Trips 2002 for $13US after rebate at Costco (same at Sam's Club), and got the 2001 version last year for 'free' after rebate at Best Buy late in the season. Definitely worth $13US.

Speaking of MapPoint web sites, here's a good one: http://www.mp2kmag.com.
