Okay, I really hate my first post here to be a technical question, but this issue is driving me nuts!
I have an iPaq 3630 with the PPC2002 upgrade. I installed the Windows Media Player from the update CD, and also got the update from PocketPC.com. WMP worked just fine for a couple of months, but just recently, it refuses to run! I get an error message saying it cannot find "player.exe" or related files. WMP & update were installed in system RAM, not on CF card.
I have done soft resets, hoping that would help, and have uninstalled other apps, thinking they may have been causing conflicts. I even went so far as to do a hard reset, and then installed WMP & update on a clean unit - I still get the same error message!!!!! Does this mean that the ROM image has somehow become corrupt?
Ironically, I have had this happen to the iGolf demo that I had, also, although that just happened recently.
This situation has been very frustrating, especially for a PPC newbie. I really like the PPC platform, but this experience is daunting, to say the least. Anybody have this happen to them, or have any suggestions on what I can do to resolve?

Though this is little help to you, I had a very similar issue with WMP. I upgraded my 3640 to PPC 2002 and installed WMP and such and everything worked great. I need the update for WMP, still everything works great. Then suddenly I get in my car one day, plug in my iPAQ, and it can't find player.exe. Player.exe was just gone. I was able to reinstall it by uninstalling through active sync and then reinstalling (I realize you have tried this, but it had worked for mine).
So at least now you know that more then one person has at least seen a similar issue.

Seem to remember it's a corrupt registry entry and WMP can't find the assigned skin. There's a post somewhere (maybe here, maybe another forum) about which registry key to delete to bring back WMP.
Happy searching - sorry I can't be more specific!

You're not talking about this, are you?

That doesn't sound like the issue, especially if the problem is there after a hard reset. In fact, the problem being there after a hard reset sounds basically impossible...??

Sort of - I was thinking of this thread (in which you mention that link)

I shouldn't have been so lazy and done a search first. The hard reset does sound very odd.

You lost your gx.dll
That is what happened. Normally happens when you uninstall one of those games that comes with a gx.dll file.
The gx.dll file is needed for the graphics interface of the device when running games or WMP.
All you have to do is... since your WMP is loaded into RAM... make a copy of the gx.dll file and save it in a safe place. Whenever you uninstall a game or so that causes te gx.dll to disappear, just copy it back into the Windows directory.

Had exactly the same problem after installing Pocket Informant 3 today. WMP no longer worked with same error message. I am at work so I uninstalled WMP and will put it back on tonight when I get home. Hopefully it will work!

Thanks for the suggestions folks - I will give some of these items a try, and see if I can't bring her back to life! I'll post back once I have a chance to try things out (just got home from vacation in Montreal tonight!).
Fix for Media Player not working after upgrade to pocket pc 2002
WMP has some files in the temp directory. If they are removed, WMP will not work.
Uninstall WMP on your device, remove the WMP directory on your PC (it is under the MS active sync dir under Program Files) and re-install the WMP wmall.exe file on your upgrade cd).
This fixed the problem for me!

I have a 3630 and PPC 2002 and I had problems with the mediaplayer and it didn't work to unistall, reinstall. So I had to manually remove the files on the desktop PC in activesync drawer, then reinstall from the CD and after that the mediaplayer update.
