Do you guys see any difference in performance (read/write speed) among different card brands?

I am into digital photography, and have been reading about some read/write tests with different cards. Depending on whether your camera can take advantage, performance can vary greatly from card to card.

There are cards now with up to 20X speed. I wonder if you'd notice any difference at all using a fast versus slow card in a PocketPC, although tt obviously depends on the application. Large games might load faster. File transfer might be improved if you are using your PocketPC as a removeable drive to transfer files (I doubt this is the case since even my cheapie MP3 CF player is much faster at file transfer than my Jornada 568.)

You need to be looking at the high end cards. Sandisk has a line called UltraCF just for high speed digital photography at http://www.sandisk.com/consumer/ultra.asp . It has a sustained transfer speed of 2.8MB per second, at least 100% faster than normal cards.

A lot of people at the dpreview forums rave about the Ridata cards, which can be had for pretty cheap on EBay as well as mydigitaldiscount.com.

I'm going to pick up of those up for my camera, guess I won't be doing the same for my Jornada...

Does anyone have a line on some cheap 256mb cf cards? I have a few 128mb cf cards, but the digital movies I want to occasionally carry around require more space.

You mention the amazon 256 card, but I'm sure I've seen them cheaper. Once the US$ gets translated to our CDN$, the cost goes a lot higher.

I haven't seen any name brand 256MB CF's under $100. Usually they are generic or "house brand" whatever that means and you are still looking at $89 including shipping.
