The report says Dell's systems will likely be based on Microsoft's Pocket PC platform."<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2002/20020621-delldude.jpg" /><br /><br />It is likely going to be a communications device of some sort, and of course the iPAQ is squarely in Dell's sights. Dell is well known for delivering quality products undercutting the competition. No word on price or availability. In fact, Dell won't even comment.<br /><br />Thanks to Mulder for the link. No, not Fox, Jim. <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif" /> <i>(I am sure he has never heard that one before.)</i>

[hands clasped in prayer mode] Dear God, please tell me the Dell doofus won't appear on TV ads saying.."Dude! You're gettin a PDA!. I beg of thee. 8O [/prayer mode]

This could help bring some credibility to the PocketPC platform, but I shudder to think what this monstrosity will look like. Style has never been one of Dell's strong points, if you know what I mean.

I love those commercials for some reason. That kid is going to be in some movie later this year.

I especially loved the Christmas commercials where "Steve" was dressed like an elf. He looked more like a troll.

I'm hoping ElectronicArts will one day release a game for PocketPC called Shoot the Troll which features "Dude." Hell, I'd buy a PocketPC just for that!

Well, there you go. Chattanooga, TN. You know, we build Dell's here in Nashville.

Dude aside, I'm really curious what Dell can come up with.

I expect that they wouldn't enter the market unless they thought they could outdo their competitors. Either with better pricing or more features. Since PocketPc is a pretty standardized platform I would imagine better pricing, just like their PC's.

How about a 64 MB built-in CF unit for $400, with pretty good screen, sound, and battery life? That could kick some serious ass in the marketplace I think, especially with Dell's consumer marketing. We all laugh at Steven, but I bet he could sell a lot of PocketPC's.

What? Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure 3: The Taste of Silicon

Seriously though this should be interesting. I think PPC's are going to end up splitting. The thicker PPC's that have ALL the bells and whistles. and Thin PPC's like the Toshiba 310. Will Dell go thick or thin or both?

Any rumors on who the contract manufacturer would be? Will Dell have the same dust plague that nearly everyone else has had to deal with?

Don't forget that Compaq, Dell, and Bush are all in (or from) good ol' Texas. Oh yeah...

Ha! I'm still waiting to see all of the new hardware before I make a purchase . Transflective screens are a must for me. The LOOX looks pretty cool. A little on the beefy side, but cool.

The Toshiba models would have been a shoe-in. But they are still using those damn reflective displays.

I still haven't seen what Casio has up its sleeve. And Samsung and Hitachi still haven't arrived on the scene.

I suspect there is a political or other type of statement in that message, with either positive or negative meaning. All good things come from Texas.... or all things wrong/bad come from Texas. Your guess is as good as mine.

I expect that Dell has already sold several hundred thousand PDAs. They were selling HP 568s before Christmas of 2001 for $440! I got my Sony Clie NR70V right at it's release for 20% off list price. No shipping, no state taxes for most means they offer a lot of efficiency of marketing delivery.

I expect that if they can sell an HP 568 for $440 and make a profit on top of HPs profit, they could sell their own model for even less. Coming into the game this late also means they would not be saddled with anything like the expansion sleeve that makes Ipaqs so big. A design that just matched the average features of all the others and sold for 10% less might make a real impact.
