Now Greg Frieger, a third party developer, has created a plug-in that allows you to do just that. The price of this is $3, and right now, it only works on a Pocket PC 2002 device. Click the title of this post to get to the Handango download [affiliate link].<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hotmail_addon.gif" /><br /><br />"Hotmail add-on for Pocket Inbox allows you to receive, read and send email messages from your Hotmail account with Pocket Inbox program included at any PocketPC as standard message handling application. Hotmail add-on lets you to download messages for offline viewing, editing and replying. Also it uses less traffic than Pocket Internet Explorer allowing you to download and handle your email faster and at lower costs."

 I splurged and spent the $3 fee for the software, and though there is no website or documentation whatsoever, I managed to connect to my hotmail account, and was able to send and receive mail, but the bodies of all of my received email, plain text or otherwise, were blank. What a bummer. I was hoping this little $3 cure would fix something microsoft should have added to begin with.

The screenshot tells it all... this is probably only useful for those who want to download spam to their Pocket PC... ;-)

Well, I've had it since yesterday, and according to a post by another user of Brighthand who says it works for him I gave it a try like this:
incoming mail: mail.hotmail.com
outgoing mail: mail.hotmail.com

I also tried mail.msn.com, pop3/smtp versions, and a few others, but always get a 'server timeout, try again later' error. I've written the developer about this, as he sent me a newer beta version. It could be he broke something in the version I tried. If this works, I am wondering, will it keep my Hotmail account active? I mean, will I never again need to do the web version once a month just to keep it alive? I really only use it for MSN Messenger, as I don't want to start using it for other stuff only to be bombarded with yet more spam. The Microsoft 'news' and warnings about auto-expiry are enough, thanks. Tried a Hotmail account once before, and after handing the address out to just a handful of software vendors I started getting the most gawd awful batches of spam! I figure about 80% of sites selling software are generating a healthy second income selling address lists. Scum.
Anyway, I'll write a mini-review if this thing works out.

I haven't purchased the software, but you can try these servers..

http://services.msn.com/svcs/passport/httpmail.asp

http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp

http://oe.hotmail.com/secure/hmdata

If you are only using a .NET Passport account for MSN Messenger, why not just create a @passport.com account, or associate your current email address as a .NET Passport? Just head over to Passport.com and rock away.

Too bad a third party developer beat MSN to the punch on this feature. =/ It was sorely needed.

Here's to looking forward to the Pocket PC MSN Client!

Thanks for the attempted help, but there are a couple of problems; none of your links gets more than an "Error 404: Page cannot be found", and I wouldn't know what to do with these pages if they existed anyway - how do I use a page to access Hotmail via Inbox? And lastly, I got a 'Passport' when I first signed up for Hotmail. Doesn't everyone? I went to passport.com again just now to see what I could see, and got a series of redirects and then a thing saying I am already signed in, which I kinda knew, as I never sign out of Hotmail. More convenient that way, and I don't use it, as I said. But there is always the chance that I might need it for some reason, and knowing the somewhat odd methods of the great beast (AKA 'Microsoft') I would rather not risk losing my Passport by not accessing my Hotmail account once a month. Could be unnecessary, but how do I know for sure?
The developer still hasn't responded to my input (with screenshots of my setup and the error), so I'll have to wait and see what to do next.
And indeed, it seems that M$ has dropped the ball again, with their single most-recognized web service. Thousands of users have asked the same question for a long time now; 'where is POP3 hotmail?" Or even synching it... but they have their hands in their pockets it seems, flipping through all their money.

I found the srv adresses ;-)
OutlookXP Go to Tools\E-Mail Accounts\Add\HTTP select Hotmail for service provider here is the link:
http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
it worked fine for me...
But it looks, the software can only get Inbox mail folder. Sent Items, Junk Mail or other folders could not be downloaded

Again, this information is not usable. I just set up my Hotmail account like you say, using my PC and Outlook Express (never did that before!). It immediately worked, on the PC. But none of the data available there is of any use in setting up Hotmail on my iPAQ. I even tried entering that whole long URL as the incoming and outgoing email servers, but testing it all I got was 'check that your servername is correct' errors. The format is wrong. Inbox setup is not like Pocket IE; it demands a correctly formatted servername, like my ISP - mail.quik.com
So if anyone has actually set this up on a PPC and got it working, as in sending and receiving Hotmail messages via a dialup or other direct internet connection (not passthrough or via Activesync!), then please post their exact method. Partial or wrong information is not very useful.

Okay, got it working. The problem is not the servernames (which may be anything you like, apparently), nor the username (or so it is reported by a couple of users), but rather that I didn't see until today that there is a Hotmail option now listed along with POP3 and IMAP4 under Service Type in the New Account setup dialogue. So if you've set it up and it doesn;t work for you, delete the account, set it up again, and this time use the drop-down to select Hotmail. Also, skip the auto-connect thing, says the setup instruction during the PC install process. (I never thought to look there, and most of the setup stuff is there, just not this bit about service type).
That said, it does not apparently support actual download of messages, only header information. Also doesn't support Delete!? But it will send a plain text message, so that's a convenience. I hope the developer manages to get incoming text and HTML-formatted email to work as well, and eventually attachments, which so far don't come in or go out.
