My new Jornada lasted 24 hours before acquiring a large piece of dust under the screen. I may love many things about the device, but HP's inability to design a dust-free screen is truly maddening. But a year from now we won't have to worry about that, will we?

Let's all hope that they take Compaq's advancement in that area and not vice versa.... :?

Do you use the built-in stylus often? It may be a coincidence, but I never do and I've never had a dust problem. I know that with the older iPAQs that's how the dust got in, but it seems like that may be the route with the HPs, too.

Im still working in my new Jornada 568 - 64mb and not a speck of dust. I think there was a discussion somewhere that after a certain serial number the problem was fixed. You might have got your computer from a store that "stocked up" on the older units. My store 'Compucentre' orderd the unit when I called them so its a newer serial number,

I have never had problem with dust with my 548 either. Just once a lice problem but I broken down and took a bath.

I'm on Jornada #3 and contemplating sending it in for #4 because of the dust issue (or the battery clip which has broken on me twice)!

Sigh... maybe the Toshiba's are the way to go -- I've had two of their laptops and you can run over them with your car and they'll keep ticking.

I thought I was the only one. I have that problem now on my 3rd Jornada. If you are not careful, after it breaks, the battery slips out with ease deleting whatever you were workin on. Fortunately, it usually happens only when I am using it more physically - like playing a game :)

I'm on number SIX, my FIFTH replacement is in route now. HP support has been truely wonderful about replacing dusty units, I actually replaced one with a dead spot on the screen for dust because they don't cross ship for repairs. (It did have dust as well) Anyway, I called HP customer service the day after the big press release and they hadn't even heard that the Jornada was being phased out. I pointed the Rep at the website and she was really shocked (I don't think she believed me). I asked when they were going to actually get dust free ones. She told me that the only thing she really knew was that their Dust exchange policy was going to remain the same as far as she knew but I might want to replace my current unit now rather than wait for the dust problem to worsen, just in case.

By the way the the "serial number" where the dust issue was "corrected" the was SG142***, then it was SG145***, now they give no exact number, just that the units SHOULD be dust free. SG for Singapore, 1 for year 2001, 45 for Week 45. Four of my replacements were higher than SG145*** and they still had dust issues. I don't know about the stylus holder being a point of entry for dust, but the BATTERY WELL is! My last 568 was dust free for almost 3 months til I blew the dust out of the battery well during a hard reset. When I powered back up I had 50-60 dust particles under the screen. I got on my HP hotline instantly, I can't survive without my baby and she needed help fast. The Rep I talked to that time simply said "you're replacement unit will be there in 2 days, can I have you address and phone number" he did not sound surprised to hear that the dust had come in through the battery well. (HP had said it was a manufacturing issue, and any dust that got under the screen was already in the PDA and it couldn't get in from the outside)

Anyway, since I'm sure the replacement policy is going to get more stringent, if for no other reason than that they aren't going to manufacture units to replace the dusty ones and they are phasing out the whole Jornada line so there will be less and less for them to replace them with. I went ahead and got another unit shipped that I hope will be really dust free. Hey, I'm an eternal optimist. The serial number this time is SG212*** so it is one of the newest made! Please, O' gods of dusty PDAs leave me be!

One last thing before I finish this book, Anyone out there hear if Toshiba is going to release a model here in the US with a 4" screen like the (e550G) model they have in Japan?

If they do, I am in line to buy one.

No, we will be buying a Casio or Toshiba.

Anyway - still no dust in my HP-568.

What IS it with you and dust. If you report getting dust in the LCD of your new G2 camera, that will be the last speck....

So, Jason what model PDA are you getting next? Just wondering, because I'm NOT getting the same one as you. I'm tired of Dust!

I'm not sure to be honest. The LOOX is very compelling, as is the new Toshiba e740. But I'm also waiting for a Phone Edition device...so who knows. :-)

Jason, you've already got the G2 cracked case? I've had my G2 since September (so it is one of the vulnerable ones) and I only noticed the crack last month after reading the Canon forums. They are very tiny and fine and you have to look for them. I know some have evolved into actual holes in the case! Don't get me wrong, I don't think you're a dusty guy or hard on your gadgets, you just seem to have bad luck about getting the flawed units. And before anyone jumps on me about that line--- obviously neither HP nor Canon nor anyone else should be turning out expensive electronics with these kinds of flaws- even if they don't happen to everyone.
