http://www.compaq.com/pcn

Gregh from Pocket PC Soft.NET informed us that Compaq has pre-announced a ROM update for the iPAQ 3800 series, to become available on June 15, 2002. These are the details Greg sent us:

Details of change:
Enhancements and Fixes:
• ClearType Enhancements: When using MS Reader and setting it for ClearType Fonts, text appearance may be very hard to read.
• Virtual Memory Improvement: Operating System may be sluggish when multiple applications are open.
• SD Format Resolution: SD Cards formatted with FAT12 may not be recognized.
• Reminder LED Resolution: LED will not flash more than 5 minutes.
• Screen Calibration Diagnostics Test: Self Calibration test may display a 018failed%u2019 message because the test parameters were too sensitive.
• Cradle/Battery Gauge Resolution: A fully charged iPAQ Pocket PC that has been on A/C power in excess of 24 hours may show a decreased battery gauge when removed from the charger.
• Lock-up During Boot Resolution
• Backlight User Interface Update
• Bluetooth Manager v1.1

Support URL:
Compaq Updates here.

This seems to show that the RAM updates that were released lately are intermediate solutions, to be address in one big ROM based update. If that is true, that is good news. Now let's just hope that they won't stop looking into that Bluetooth stack loading problem, and have that done at the same time!

I don't know if it will be a XIP or full ROM update, but at least it's not a RAM update. :)

While there are hints in the context of the description posted, you might want to clarify on the front page that this upgrade is for 38xx series only.

Good idea, consider it done!

My understanding is that the latest Bluetooth update from Compaq fixes the Bluetooth stack problem. From the description it sounds like Compaq is bundling up all of the patches they have released to date into either an XIP (I would think) or full ROM update. That should free up some RAM from installing these patches, but I wonder if it will require a hard reset.

Marlof,
do you know if "Backlight User Interface Update" means that we can hope for a fix of the backlight problem on the 3850?

Once again, Compaq has not come through...it's June 24th and there's still no ROM update for the 3800 series. June 24 is supposed to be the re-scheduled release date for the 3800 ROM. Grrr...not sure if i'd be happier or more upset if they didnt mention release dates at all.
