http://pocketblog.com/

We got an email a few weeks ago about this “Mobile offline Blogger” program for Pocket PCs that would allow weblogers to compose entries on their Pocket PC and have them post when you sync. I’ve wanted to do a little thoughting about this for a while. The idea of a ‘mobile offline blogging” This isn’t a new idea; folks have been doing it for a long time. For instance, I have running word documents in which I compose weblog entries that is kept on my Jornada (Granted I rarely use this, but the idea is there). I’ve been told that Greymatter will work with AvantGo, and I assume MoveableType will as well. There is something really convient about having a database type program that automatically posts entries to the CMS. I think this might be something that would help my ability to Blog more effectively. I’d like a spell checker and a slightly more advanced implementation on the side of the various CMSes, but it isn’t a perfect world I suppose. Pocket Blog is currently in Beta if you are daring enough, and I eagerly await its final release.

Am I missing something here? BLOGGING is what I do with my Ipaq at least 50% of the time, and I would love a program that allows me to do it all from my Ipaq.

So, where on the site referred to is the program?

Does it support different BLOG sites, like Diaryland, Open Diary, etc.?

Scroll down to the April 14 entry on the site to download the Pocket Blog beta. So far it supports Radio Userland, Movable Type, and Blogger.

This is EXACTLY the kind of program I've been looking for; don't you just love it when something comes along that's perfect for your needs?

www.pocketblog.com is the URL for the program.

It uses the Blogger API for communication with the backend server, so PocketBlog can be used with any CMS that supports that API.

If you use LiveJournal (http://www.livejournal.com) for your blogging or journaling (as I do) they also have a PocketPC-based client that uses AvantGo to allow offline entries. It works very well.

Sam: Thanks for posting about Pocket Blog, the web site is getting a lot of flow from it.

For Blogger users there is AvantBlog (http://www.dentedreality.com.au/avantblog/). PocketLJ (http://www.moobug.co.uk/pocketlj/home/) appears to provide a somewhat richer interface for LiveJournal users (LJ has a ton of features that don't exist in other weblog software, with it's own API).

An update to Pocket Blog should be ready soon. To the best of my knowledge it is stable (doesn't crash), but presently it does not cope with errors very well and sometimes it is unable to detect an Internet connection. Once the .NET Compact Framework becomes available it should be possible to add more advanced features, like spell-check.

How do you go about selecting a blog if you have multiple post? I saw in the Server Settings that you can choose a primary blog you want to work on but it doesn't allow you to post to multiple blogs in 1 offline session. Any idea? No FAQ's yet on PocketBlog.com.

:?: Has anybody figured out how to set this up to publish on blogspot.com? I don't have my own site to publish to so i use blogspot.com. There aren't any setttings for server, path, etc. haven't found any settings at blogger.com or info at pocketblog.com either. The only info I need to input is the url on blogspot.com to publish to (i.e. http://<blogname>.blogspot.com)

Right now PB is only designed to work with a single weblog. Supporting multiple weblogs, servers, and category routing is on the ToDo list, see the Roadmap link on pocketblog.com.

BlogSpot is Blogger, try the default settings.

Server: plant.blogger.com
Port: 80
Path: /api/RP2

Let me know if that doesn't work, I'll try adding BlogSpot to my Blogger account.

No, I don't think it works at all. I have e-mailed the creator with no reply. (He has updated his pocketblog site to say that he cannot help anyone who cannot get it to work...)

And I have located and communicated with a number of other would-be users who have all said, "hey, it didn't work for me."

In fact, I have yet to find someone who says it actually works with a 3870.

Period.

Frank McPherson had it working with a 3870, over Bluetooth to boot.

If you're a Blogger user, and you've been getting an "Object Required" message when updating, release 0.1.5 ought to do the trick.

If the problem is something else, sorry... I don't have much free time (job hunting, girlfriend, etc), and I don't have the money to buy more Pocket PCs to test with.

Well, there you go...nothing a new release couldn't fix, I guess

I pulled down the new version, and it does seem to work just fine (even wirelessly across my network!)

(It did throw an error on first run, but I am guessing that was just until it downloaded the existing posts.)

I will play with it over my t68 gprs connection as well. If it works its the perfect portable blogger....

there are just a few enhancements, however... :D that would make it even better...just kidding, good luck with .net!

And thanks again for the tool.

Is development of this software dead? This seems to be the only PPC software that I might be able to use to blog to my Nucleus-based blog, but it hasn't been updated in 2 years...

The developer is great, but it seems he is *VERY* busy these days. I know he was working on the software on the QT, he even made a few test posts on his own weblog using it during some testing...

But it is apparently not something he is ready to release.

You can track him down here if you are interested in more info: http://ntwizards.net/

Perhaps if you comment on one of his last posts on the software, he will get back to you...

(I have switched back to the other side with a Treo 650, so my interest nowadays is purely "scholarly.")

hi
I also thought that the app is dead. There is realy no more updating, and it seems, that it does not work on the newer pocket pc versions.
I got .NET 1.x to work on the Pocket PC, but the PocketBlog still says that there is no VB runtime installed. So I guess it does not work with my Pocket :-(
On the M$ site it says, that VB is replaced with the .NET standard and will not bee supported anymore. And If I download the VB setup i only get a CAB file with lots of numbered files, thats it...

Does someone know other applications which can do such things like pocketbog can do ?

sirco, i'm in the same boat. i finally got on the "blogging bandwagon", but was disappointed when this program didn't work on my WM2003SE device. maybe someone will code a newer version. i'll keep my eye out for new blogging software and post my findings here.
