The little device generates the big bucks, it seems: sales went up 18% last quarter and reached $160 million. And that's with a profit...

More from the article: "According to the company, firefighters use the device to track wildfires, pilots use it to track flights and BMW sells it as an option with its Z3 in Germany, allowing executives to use it for navigation in the car and as an organizer once they leave. Compaq also said it is working with Raytheon to develop Agama, a more rugged version of the iPaq for the military market."

An interesting comment in the article is that we "can draw our own conclusions" on whether the Jornada will survive given that Compaq is the market leader. Especially when there's another article on CNET saying that "in many cases, HP has said it will use an "adopt and go" strategy: one company's unit will survive, while a similar unit in the other company will be eliminated" (see http://news.com.com/2100-1001-887845.html ) I'd be surprised though if there's any announcement about an XScale iPAQ until the merger is finalized.

Shouldn't that be "suckers" not "sucker's"? Don't get me started about the over use of exclamation marks either.

It's rare to get a piece of hardware that is just sooooooooo far ahead of it's time that it has people's jaws dropping everywhere. I don't think we'd be here talking about Pocket PC's now if it wasn't for the first iPaq's success. It really kept MS's efforts in the handheld segment going.

2nd generation bought another first. Still the only mainstream handheld with built-in Bluetooth.

3rd generation ???

Congrats to the Compaq engineers that came up with this ground breaking product... :)

why? because iPAQ has socket for connecting so called "expansion packs", with which many things are possible: using fullsize PCMCIA cards, specialized packs for various purposes, etc etc

well,

sorry folks but soon the toshiba willbe able to that and the casio e-200 can already do that and more, so i stand by statement, IPAQ is and will always be and overhyped device that lead to bigger profit margin for executives by asking you to pay for expansion pack (pc card (100$, compact flash (40$, double pc card ($199), add-on and you will that for the same price you can get a very nice laptop.

i know people like to buy it because they love gadget (i'm one of those) and do have large pocket (3 laptop bought in the last three years, all top of the line) but paying for a IPAQ +sleeve at 640$ when at 300$ i have the same (toshba e550), which leave me $300 for adding (sd card 128meg, modem, wireless or bluetooth and 2356 meg cf card), well guess what i'm going to take.

that's just my opinion, it could change if an ipaq could sell for $300 ...

This can and will change fast now. With the economy of scale Compaq has in PPC and the inside route they have with Intel, I expect to see them match Toshiba within a month with a $400 Ipaq that has all the 3835 has, for $400 list. We will see.
