So you wanted pictures of the newest Pocket PC? Thanks to my good friend and fellow MVP <a href="http://www.cifani.it">Giorgio Cifani</a> we have some very nice pictures of the Toshiba e310. Clicking on a picture should take you to a high resolution version.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/e310_1.jpg"><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/e310_small1.jpg" /></a> <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/e310_2.jpg"><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/e310_small2.jpg" /></a><br /><br />It is very visible here how thin the Toshiba e310 is! All we can hope is that they manage to squeeze in a battery that gives it sufficient battery life.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/e310_3.jpg"><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/e310_small3.jpg" /></a> <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/e310_4.jpg"><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/e310_small4.jpg" /></a><br /><br />These pictures show the comparison in size between the Toshiba e310 and the HP Jornada 565. What I'd like to see next, is a picture of the e310 next to a Palm m515, but I guess not too much of those are available around the Microsoft Mobility Developer Conference, where these pictures were taken. :)

That thing makes the Jornada look THICK! I can't wait to see one of these in person...

Something about the device reminds me of the Compaq Aero 1500 Series. Although they were greyscale, I loved that line of Windows CE devices. The reduced size makes a big difference to me! Any thoughts on this?

Wow! Ok... I just have to keep telling myself, "No new pocket pc until it runs at 400MHz and has a built-in digital/analog cell phone..... My ipaq does more...."

But it is not new, cool, and thin...

Heheh Jason Lee, I am telling myself that too. :D

Plus (and I know it's asking a lot) I would dearly love a CF reader in that slim form factor... I've got about 1.5 gigs worth of CF card investments, and don't really want to go to yet another storage medium (hell, it took me almost a year to dump all my MMC memory cards I had for an old Oly C2020 digicam).

I'll accept another mm or 2 if I could get GSM/GPRS and a CF slot...

but drooooool, none the less. This thing looks almost as slim as the Palm V (which I think is the all time slim leader, to this day, right?)

TOTALLY. The Aero 1500's were kiiller products back in the day, but nobody really stuck with the ultra-thin except on the Palm side of things. So what if this device isn't XScale. It is less then half an inch thick. Pretty soon this devices price will drop and it will be a steal! Depending on what features the e740 has, it could be a good idea to pick up both...and use the e310 when you need to "save space."

Toshiba e310: 4.9x3.1x0.5
Palm m515: 4.5x3.1x0.5

Yeah, real thin...

Thoughts??

How about my only PocketPC is a trustworthy Aero 1530 (have had it for more than two years) upgraded to PocketPC 2000 and have not found a replacement PocketPC as thin as my Aero. I guess the search is over. For me, thin is a must, and I was almost tempted to get a Clié or an M515 because of the size... not anymore.

having owned every platform (PPC, Palm 4.1, Epoch), and diverse products (HP545, iPaq 3650, Diamond Mako, Sony Clie T415, EM-500) I have to say that the one thing that still bugs me is the lack of personal expression allowed by these devices.

I really think Casio was on to something when they made the EM-500. My red one always gets attention. It looks so cool. No one seems to care about it using PPC2000 and a MIPS chip when I tell them that it cost me $300 CDN.

It may be underpowered by today's standards, but I have been around the PDA block and this one is right for me.

Why doesn't someone come up with a similarly 'consumer' product? I think that Toshiba is missing the boat here. The 310 is too corporate. It dosn't have to come in a rainbow of colors, but the killer screen and button layout would be welcome.

in case you are still considering the Sony (I assume its the 415/615 ultrathin models), have a look at the bottom seam. You can actually pry the front and back shell apart. I was surprised that Sony's build quality was so poor.

I returned mine. I thought the Clie was the only Palm worth buying, I was wrong; none of them are worth buying.

That's right, Perry, that's right.

Wow,

Glad to see I'm in good company. I too see a resemblence to my once beloved Aero 1350/1500 (I liked it SOO much I ordered the ROM upgrade board).

I'm glad to see a PocketPC company re-entering the Ultra-thin arena where Palm & Handspring have been the only player.

BTW, I noticed a Bluetooth SD card sticking out of this thing. Hopefully they'll finally release the thing. :-)

Notice I said "almost"... I had a fever that day and was delirious and suddenly the Palm OS seemed to look good in one of those Cliés

I'm just waiting for a thin PocketPC to hit the market, and I think this might be it. I've had too many people say they would not get a PocketPC because of their size... this model (if priced right) would finally be the killer PocketPC that might convert Palm users not willing to carry bricks in their pockets.

If it only had an XScale processor... :(

Oh, I am pretty sure that by the time the other XScale devices get out, there will be an XScale version of this product. I mean, Toshiba probably just wants to get a bigger name in the PDA market, and I don't blame them. It's called branding. They are not going to come out with 3 significantly different models at the same time. They are going to probably bring this model and the XScale one out at the same time and then three months or so later bring out a thin XScale PPC at a lower price, but without USB host and CF2 (only SD/MMC memory expansion).

See what I mean? If you give everyone too many choices, you will sell more of one than another and all your models will be competing for the same mindshare. If you spread them out over 5 or 6 months, then your profit margins will increase and your market share, at the same time. (although your market share will grow slower on a short-term scale, long-term your market share will increase more).

I don't know. I've never taken economics or anything, but this is what I think.

CompUSA has one of these at $399 (US). It has a very simple, easy to use "Home" application (Help|About calls it Home, with a copyright but no copyright owner listed) with a tabbed interface, very Windows 98/2000-ish. This home app alone makes this a good selection for the PPC novice (I might get one for my wife). It's very light, not too geeky looking (I think it follows the Handspring styling)...Add a 128mb MMC/SD card for backups and documents, and I think it is purse-perfect.

Don't worry, I'm still not giving up my Jornada (well, maybe I will...)

Hello I've been a pocket pc fan for 2 years now. Great devices!! And have gotten some great info from this forum. I check it out every day. So here is my first post :)

Does anyone know how well the game pad works on the 310. Is it 4way or 8 way? Also how is the battery life? I also heard/saw that the clear type didn't seem to work very well. Anyone know whats up with that? Living in Manhattan the small size of it is very appealing. I always carry my casio in my front pocket and the thing is like a brick.

Thanks for your help.

I haven't tried it for gaming, but the pad seemed quite nice - it felt better than the iPAQ. Not sure about battery life - I only played with it for 30 minutes. The ClearType glitches are there, but in all honesty, the average user won't notice it. ClearType gurus will run screaming from it, but the price point, size, and looks of the device are very compelling...

has anyone noticed that the light on their e-310 doesn't seem quite as bright after a few days? I'm not sure if its my imagination or if the thing is loosing steam.
