http://www.compaq.com/showroom/handhelds.html

I always thought this day would come, so this doesn't come as that much of a surprise. What DOES surprise me, however, is that I hadn't heard a peep about this until now, and didn't see it at CeBit: Compaq is launching an iPAQ running the Symbian OS. Details are sketchy at this point, but it appears to have the same body as the 3800 series (I could only find one photo), will have 64 megs of RAM, and most exciting of all: 400 mHz XScale processor!

There are a lot of things that I find tempting about the Symbian OS, so I'm really looking forward to evaluating one of these things. I guess I'd better go register Symbianthoughts.com! :-) I also have a larger version available. The URL above goes to the Compaq web page, where I'm told that by noon MST today they'll have the details about this device up. Kudos to Compaq for being so secretive about this!

UPDATE: April Fools Day! :-)

I'm glad I didn't buy my new PPC yet. I was about to buy my new one last week. Guess I'll stay with the 3600 till I read up on this new PPC.

Please conduct you evaluation and post your review ASAP.

Thanks :)

actually if anybody would like to run symbian on compaq ipaq's it would be very very easy to do it: the same processor is already there. actually I think that if symbian would succeed in smartphones, compaq would be first to put symbian into their ipas. compaq is not doing software so it is indifferent for compaq what they put inside.

but generally: symbian is meant to be operating system for smartphones, not for PDA...

Wow! That's amazing, Jason! I was just on Compaq's website and they have some info about that model, if you go deeper. Apparently that is just the mid-range model.

It looks like they also have broken the mold of other PDAs and brought 640x480 16-bit color LCD in their high-end Symbian OS iPAQ 4000. It uses OLED-like technology to provide great battery life and high contrast. Compaq Czech Republic (http://www.compaq.cz/tiskzpr/2002/4pr!1f001$.shtml) has apparently decided to post it before the rest of the world. That's where I got this info.

Hopefully they finally solved the dust issue! To be released Q2 2002 in the U.S. and Japan, if my "Europe's Languages" guide is anything to go by...

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this, I truly appreciate it. Should I set up a forum for you to moderate called "Avatar Critiques"?

PS - It's "Wolverine", but I'm sure you already knew that. As I'm sure you already knew that Wolverine's true origin is still a mystery, so any speculation as to where he was born is just that, speculation. 8)

well, I know of certain asian producer who is working on putting symbian into PDA (not into cell phone!), so your fool's day joke actually is not so far from reality!

of course compaq has too close ties with microsoft so it cannot risk it by putting symbian into ipaq, but believe me, it would take them very little time/resources to do it...

PS. I like X-Men very much, particularly the movie, and indeed Wolverine is my favorite character out of all X-Men (actually nobody knew how old he is)...

I heard the same thing in August of 2000 re: iPAQ and Linux.

I won't buy another Compaq. When I bought my first one, they failed to tell me that I had to pre-mix the gas & oil and I accidentally fried it. My replacement unit runs on Slick50. Yeah...That's the ticket!

not a bad idea at all! (this summer Symbian starts invasion of USA and by the end of this year, who knows, maybe this address would be of use...)

I have registered http://my-symbian.com myself, but I have
traded it to my friend already who has most popular
and best web site about Symbian based cell phones...

OHBOY, why it is so strange for you that Symbian COULD RUN on iPaQ? several current Symbian devices run on EXACTLY THE SAME processor as iPaq: strongArm! adaption of Symbian to iPAq would really take little time!!!

It would have been nice to see the iPaq run a meaty OS, but I still don't like the current trend in handhelp devices. I'm more of a clamshell man myself (though, I must admit to being slightly tempted by the cheap Jornadas going around these days - I need a snazzy route planner for my car).

Nevertheless, nice joke (The giveaway that this is a joke was when you said you found Symbian tempting - Microsoft don't like it so it figures you don't either) and the screenshot was quite convincing. But I think that the guy who commented on the fact that Microsoft wouldn't allow Compaq to use another OS (a la Dell) is right on the button.

I'm just a fool.
a fool in love with youuuuuuu.

PSion Mako iShark. Yeah, that's the ticket. With pictures of my wife on it....my wife.....Morgan Fairchild! (whom I've kissed!) yeah, and they paid me to take it home. It comes with a 1 gig Memory Stick. RIGHT, and the camera built-into the light sensor hole just like the new Erikson Symbian Phones.

Thats open for debate.... My site also specialises in Symbain, it was the first for general Symbian although My-Comm is a great site. They do have two different targets allabouter6 being a little more tech and high end user focused.

I'd agree though that Symbian is on the move.
