<a href="http://www.phatware.com/hpcnotes/hpcnotes3std.html">http://www.phatware.com/hpcnotes/hpcnotes3std.html</a><br /><br />PhatWare Corporation has released HPC Notes version 4.0, the newest incarnation of its popular note-taking application for Pocket PCs and Handheld PCs.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hpcnotes_anim.gif" /><br /><br />"With HPC Notes, you can create notes and memos, then classify and organize them according to note type, subject, and/or creation date. The resulting notes files are completely searchable, making it a great way to organize meeting notes, journal entries and other collections of text."<br /><br />Other features include:<br /><br />• Password protection of notes<br />• Ability to send e-mail messages directly from the HPC Notes application<br />• File compression to minimize storage requirements<br />• Rich text editing<br />• Ability to attach files and create hyperlinks<br />• Hierarchical note structure<br />• Customizable views<br /><br />HPC has released Version 4.0 for both its standard and lite versions. The only functional difference between the two editions is that with the standard version you can synchronize notes files with your desktop Outlook files. HPC has also announced that a similar upgrade to their Professional Edition will be available 3Q2002.<br /><br />I first used HPC Notes nearly two years ago and have always liked it; it's been an invaluable tool for keeping track of all the meeting notes I have to take at work. If you have even the slightest need for a note-taking application, I suggest you try out the <a href="http://www.phatware.com/dl.html">free trial version</a>.

I went straight ahead to download the trial copy of HPC Notes 4.0 Standard after I had read the email about it from Phatware. I have been running the program on both my HPC/Pro 2000 and Pocket PC 2002, and the desktop. And it is the single most important CE app to me. I have been longing for the features that 4.0 has promised, in particular the ability to read the list of database side-by-side with the active record. For that matter, the new version seems to have caught up a lot with the desktop version in terms of features. Unfortunately, the installer had asked me to remove my existing Professional version from the desktop before performing the installation. As I do most of the editing on the desktop version, I cannot afford to uninstall it. I have revisited the installation page of HPC Notes at http://www.phatware.com/hpcnotes/hpcnotes3std.html but it seems there isn't any information on upgrading from previous version. I guess I probably have to wait for the May release of the Professional upgrade then.
This is the killer app. I use it to track all of my "technical" helps I put together for work. The really nice thing is that since it syncs with my desk top at home I always have all of my helps up to date and with me. I use the Pro version and highly recommend it.

Out of curiosity, what makes this app superior to using Pocket Word? Understand, I don't know much about it, but I'm all for a 'killer app' for notes. I'd just like to understand why it's a 'killer app'.
Thanks.

Basically it's about the only thing out there that synchronises Outlook Notes to the Pocket PC and retains their categorisation properly.
I put up with it for this reason alone, but I would love to be able to do without it and use the built-in Notes application. I've tried many times, but the category sync thing is a must for me.
I'm afraid I find the $19.95 upgrade cost to 4.0 too much.
They still haven't got 'New' button integration nor system 'Find' functionality. The built-in 'Find' function in HPC notes is irritating in the extreme, taking way too many taps to get a simple job done IMO.

In my newbie-ness 1 1/2 years ago, I immediately purchased the Pro version of HPC Notes after using the trial version that came on my HP 548 CD. Fine no problem. One of the features that I used often was e-mailing the notes via Active Sync. OK, great. Then, I upgraded to an HP 568, PocketPC 2002. Note on the Phatware site that it says all its products are fully functional with PPC2002. WRONG! Check out the Phatware news forum and you'll see that the e-mail function doeasn't work with PPC2002. SO basically I have to spend about $20 to get this function to work in PPC2002 when they release the Pro version in May. Their costs are a little steep!
Not sure if I'll upgrade...time to look around for other similar apps...
I have found HPC Notes indispensable. I used it on a Palm, then when I switched to PPC I didn't use HPC right away. I was lost. While Outlook Notes is OK, I was frustrated by having everything from scraps of information to How To documents scattered all over the PPC and desktop/laptop. Scraps in Outlook Notes, longer documents in Word, other pieces of info in other PPC applications. Now I use HPC notes to consolidate and organize all this data in one location. I have several HPC notes databases, so I can switch between like-minded information with ease. Also, HPC Notes has a desktop application, which syncs well with the PPC. I have found myself using HPC Notes on the desktop even more than Word for simple notetaking, organization, etc. You can also export from HPC into Word (if need be), and even cut and paste and drag n drop between the two (if memory serves me here). I can also have a bulleted list in HPC Notes, and I can't in Pocket Word. It's an excellent solution.
