Charles P. Schell IV has found a page on Compaq's Web site that tells you why.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/compaq_sd.jpg" /><br /><br />"Compaq 64MB and 128MB Secure Digital (SD) Memory Cards with technology codes identified below may become inoperable after a short period of use. You may encounter any of the following situations:<br /><br />• Storage card is not displayed as being present in File Explorer even though the card is inserted correctly. <br />• 'Error Copying File' message is displayed when copying and pasting files using the card, indicating 'Cannot create or replace a file as no storage memory is available'. The card may be recognized but will not display the contents. <br />• 'Error' message is displayed when trying to back up data to the card indicating an 'Unknown Backup Information Error'."<br /><br />Apparently, not all Compaq SD cards have this problem, so you can compare the lot number on your SD card to a table on the site to see if yours could be faulty. There are also instructions for what to do if you do have a defective card.

I THOUGHT this new witness protection program seemed a bit simplistic!

Believing that Compaq is not in the SD card manufacturing business, who's cards are these really?

Been a lot of SD problems on the newsgroups. Can't imagine they were all Compaq brand.

Agreed. Makes me wonder if my Toshiba SD card is suspect.

What really ticked me off was the amount of searching I had to do to even find the post. I had spent a day formatting and erasing and reformatting. It would work for a few minutes and then die -- or work for hours and then self destruct. I had DLed every format utility on the web in an effort to fix it. :x

Then I got to deal with CompaQ customer service who asked 2 billion questions about the Pocket PC before we ever got to the real problem.

I have a LEXAR Media 64MB SD Card and experience the same problem. The model number is SD064-231.

GREEEAAAAT. Bought a Toshiba to replace my buggy SanDisk SD! After reading the burb, I thought I was 'safe' with my Toshi SD, but since Compaq's not letting us know WHO makes their cards, it MIGHT be Toshiba. D'oh!

I'd be a little P.O.ed if I shelled out the outrageous $$ Compaq is charging for their SD cards only to have them fail after a few weeks use!
