<a href="http://www.idruna.com/pocketphojo.html">http://www.idruna.com/pocketphojo.html</a><br /><br />I meant to post on this earlier, but it got lost in the shuffle. If you're a professional photojournalist looking to break away from your laptop and running for a phone line to transmit, this is a very innovative solution. Built-in FTP & image editing features make this a killer app for professionals in the field.<br /><br />"Idruna Software Inc., an innovative provider of desktop and mobile graphics software is pleased to announce the launch of Pocket Phojo, the first handheld photo editing and wireless transmission solution specifically designed for photojournalists. Instead of requiring a bulky laptop to get photos to the press agencies, photojournalists can now fit all of the tools they need in their pocket. For situations such as rapidly breaking stories, or in locations where laptops are impractical, this represents a breakthrough in the time required to get a photo from the camera to the photo desk. <br /><br />"We are privileged to have been able to work with several highly respected photojournalists in tailoring Pocket Phojo to the unique and demanding needs of the photojournalist in the field." said Paul Nolan, CEO of Idruna. "We feel that our handheld solution is poised to completely replace the laptop in this market, not only greatly reducing the amount of equipment the already burdened photojournalist requires, but making the whole process of getting images from the front lines to the front page quicker and easier."<br /><br />There's also a great overview of the product <a href="http://www.robgalbraith.com/diginews/2002-01/2002_01_30_phojo.html">on this site</a> with some images.
$499 for a PocketPC application.
They are definately pricing themselves into the 'Professional' market, and out of the mainstream user. Also isn't $800 a little steep for a iPaq H3850, CF sleeve (Doesn't the iPaq come with one), RS232 lead and 32MB SD Card... seems a little steep.
Looks to be a nice application though... I wonder how many they'd sell to 'amateur' photographers. I'd like to be able to use this with my S30.
Just my 2c.

Hehe...
Everytime I say "Phojo" I can't help but think "Mojo". Then of course I can't help but add "Jojo"...
Now, about that Dexter/PowerPuff Girls Xbox game...

And if ever there was a reason for Canon to think again about their PocketPC, this is one of them.
But the price? Woooaaaaah there VISA card! Steady now boy!
I can't imagine many a person's flexible friend being man enough to justify that without first having to kill the wife who wants a new carpet, more crockery and nice bathroom tiles!

I like taking photos and I would definitely use a program like this but $499 is absurd. Come on now, that is basically the price of a new PDA. If you look at the screen shots and specs for the program I would say it looks very nice and worthy of a $50 price tag (which in my opinion is a lot for a PPC application) but it is not worth ten times that amount.
I'm sure that there are plenty of other ways that you can achieve the same functionality without breaking the bank. Resco's Picture Viewer or even Idruna's Photogenics comes to mind and I'm sure that there are more than a few FTP programs out there that are affordable and between the two you would have basically the same functionality as Phojo with only investing about $50.

The price is targeted at professional photojournalists. When you develop a piece of software you have to determine the market. If you think that everyone who owns a Pocket PC would want to buy it, you price it one way (i.e. - lower), whereas if you think the market is small but can justify a higher price (as may be the case here), you price it high knowing you won't be selling a boatload of them. If the market is small and the members of that market are poor, well...you picked the wrong app to develop. :)

Just to add to my last comments...
I actually think this product would be useful to more than just photojournalists. A couple of additional markets that come to mind:
1) Web site owners. Couple this with a PPC-friendly web front-end for updating site content and it would be great for doing fast updates to your site while you patrol the floor of CES, for instance.
2) Average consumers. Couple this with an online photo book site for quickly sending your pictures up there. Eliminate the desktop middle-man.
But, as I said, at the price they've set, their market will be pretty much what they've already publicly stated: photojournalists.
