Preamble Mode?

Does anyone know what the Preamble Mode setting that some Wireless NICs have is set for? The two options are Long Tx Mode and Short Tx Mode.

I connect to two different Wireless LANs and my NIC won't connect unless I manually set this option, since the two LANs apparently use different modes.

Most client cards are still using Long Preamble. There is no way to change that in the client cards as far as I know. Not every AP manufacturer allows you to change it either. Staying with Long Preamble is the best bet.

What does the preamble do anyway? All I know is that if its not set for long, my linksys and orinoco cards won't talk to each other.
