I've read over the comments in this thread a few times, and I've decided that no anonymous posting will be allowed at this time. I might change that in a few months, but we're in growth mode, and there is a lot of work still to be done. I'd much rather focus on improving the site for registered users. Down the road, I may open up the front page news forums to anonymous commenting, but only if I can restrict anonymous users from abusing HTML while leaving it open for registered users. Currently, that's not a phpBB option.

mmidgley pointed this out in the same thread: "Why are Guests allowed to post, and use the same poster name as a registered user?" It looks like it's a hole in phpBB, and we're actively seeking a patch for it, because there doesn't appear to be a way to disable it via the config panel.

Cool! This'll be the first PocketPC website that I frequent where anonymous posting isn't allowed... :)

Yeah... I'm with the majority. I think registering forces people to more-or-less take on an identity and take some level-of-responsibility for their posts.

I agree. It's harder to have a meaningful conversation with an anonymous coward.
