My supportive friends at Kingston (hi David!) sent me their new HyperX 1066mhz DDR2 4 GB kit. It's a quad-stick kit, meaning it's meant for motherboards with four RAM slots, where the user wants to fill all four up. This helps keep the cost relatively low ($192 USD MSRP), but gives the user 4 GB of fast RAM. This RAM is for a little project I wanted to work on - remember the monster media machine I built last year, the Shuttle SD39P2? Well, I was never able to overclock it as much as I thought I should be able to - and I think the 800mhz RAM was holding the system back. One email and two days later, Kingston delivers me this new RAM to test out. I won't be able to dig into the testing until sometime in April (I have a vacation coming up), but look for a Quick Look article then about my experiences with the RAM - I suspect I'll be able to get some nice speed out of thatIntel Core 2 Extreme X6800 CPU.
Actually, funny you should mention that...when I told Kingston about my contest yesterday, they said they'd like to donate a couple of prizes. And they prizes may look a lot like that photo...stay tuned. :D

I'm looking forward to learning whether or not the faster ram will make a noticeable difference. I just installed a Q6600 and would be willing to pay a price premium if the speed difference is noticeable.

Jason, are you going to use the new ram on a 32 bit OS?

Just in case, "I think this new RAM from Kingston would be a great help in crunching bytes for my next home video project on my PC."

Gotta get those entries in early!

It only makes a difference insofar as when you overclock the system bus, the RAM is overclocked, and this you get more overall performance. If you don't overclock, the RAM won't make your system perform any faster.

Yeah, I'm sticking with Vista 32-bit for now, so there's about 3.5 GB of RAM available for use. It's funny, with SP1 installed, it now reports the total amount of RAM installed (4.0 GB) but not how much the system can actually use. That's probably for the best considering how many people were probably getting Vista systems with 4 GB of RAM and thinking there was something wrong with Vista when it was reporting 3.5 GB usable.

I'll move to 64-bit when I feel the ecosystem is ready for it - drivers, installers, applications, etc. Right now I hear nothing bit painful stories from people running 64 bit.
