Although the basic theme of this site has stayed the same over the years, when we launched with a new name and a new template a couple of months ago, I figured it was time for a grand re-launch contest as a way of thanking long-time readers, and of course bringing in new readers.

The contests will be simple: every week-day I'll be highlighting one of the prizes we're giving away, and you'll have to post a comment in the thread answering my question (likely related to the item and what you'd like to do with it, or what your favourite feature is). One random winner will be selected when the contests are all closed, which will be in early April. There may be some geographical restrictions on some of the contests (due to shipping costs), so pay attention to the individual contest description to make sure you qualify.

Now, let's get to the list of prizes! Thanks to a great group of very generous sponsors whom I'm grateful to, I have the thrill of being able to give away just under $6500 USD worth of prizes (and there may be one more coming). Here's what we're lining up to give away over the next few weeks:

GRAND PRIZES
Orb Audio Mod1 PLUS 5.1 surround sound system: These small speakers pack a lot of punch, and look good doing it. I have a set I'm currently reviewing, and they're absolutely fantastic. I hope Germany doesn't have "geographical restrictions" :D

It varies by company - some of the things are just a big too big/heavy to ship overseas.

They're SO nice...I have a slightly upgraded set that I'm reviewing, the Mod2 package, but the speakers are the same and they sound very, very good. I wasn't sure what to expect when I first set them up, but the sound quality is excellent - especially when you consider the price point.

Thank you very much for putting this out there for us!

Quick questions: Do you have to post at least once for each item in order to qualify? And definitely correct me if I'm understanding this wrong, but one person will win everything?

Yes, that's correct. Each contest is self-contained. Each contest will have one winner, or more than one winner if there are multiples to be given away.

And definitely correct me if I'm understanding this wrong, but one person will win everything?

 No, absolutely not! That would be extremely unfair to everyone but the person winning it all. ;) Winners of previous contests can enter other contests, so it's technically possible for one person to win multiple prizes (though quite statistically unlikely).

Just curious, what method do you use for drawing the winners? Hopefully the algorithm you use picks people with the first character "T" and last character "l" with a "-Wil" in the middle. ;)

I go to www.random.org and punch in the number of posts as the max number, then let it pick a number, and I map that to the post of the winner. I really want a script to do that for me at some point. :p

Very cool stuff, Jason. I am jazzed over the Vista Camcorder, but would be a happy camper to win anything. You have the coolest job in this give-away: The bestower of wondrous cyber-toys. What fun!

While I can't do it right now, I will try to write up a short piece for this zine on two of the hottest DSLRs on the market, including the new Nikon D60 and its equal number Canon. I have been a shutterbug for years and beta-tested both lightroom and the new Photoshop. Adobe already has it in the works to put out new software late this year. IE-They are trying to go with a single year subscription arrangement which strikes me as a bit crazy given the complexity of each major software type.

It seems that IT firms are willing to go with unrealistic consumer replacement timetables. Dell and friends got hammered when they assumed the market would force consumer into an 18 month-2yr hardware replacement cycle. And, this happened long before the credit crutch was upon us. They collectively got a bucket of cold H20 on their bottom line. Back comes Michael Dell,,, you know the rest. Microsoft choked on a Longhorn-bad joke. The lesson that should have been learned from this continuing nightmare is never to assume that both 1) Creativity can be forced or that: 2) industry can dictate consumer buying habits.

I will try to write on the above in a more coherent manner, over the weekend.
