Let me tell you why. First off, a lot of Mac users are tired of the iPod. Most Mac users have probably owned at least 2 iPod’s at this point and would probably be interested in switching over to another player. If for no other reason, just to give it a try. Second, Mac owners like to think they are different. I think Zune could pray on Mac users counter culture sensibilities."

Stefan, I like your spirit, I really do! But I really wonder if there are a lot of Mac users who are tired of the iPod and wanting to jump ship to the Zune. I have to be honest. I just don’t see it happening. Apple market share is only around 7% anyway. Even if a generous 50% of all Mac users wanted a Zune that only accounts for a miniscule part of the market.

So how about this: If Microsoft can do it without committing any resources that are committed to making the Zune better then sure, I’m all for it! But if they need to spend valuable time and energy that could be used on adding features to develop what would almost certainly be a niche market then I’d rather not see it happen. (even if the Zune software DOES look good on that desktop!)

another cool thing that would pray on counter culture would be zune for linux. which would free me from needing to purchase a version of windows when i build my own comp soon.

I think a Mac OS X compliant version of the Zune software would be a brilliant idea. Though couldn't Mac users utilize VMWare Fusion (http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/) to have the Zune software run on top of OS X's desktop?

Yeah...I just don't see it. Mac users love Apple products - the number of Mac users with iPods that would switch would be tiny. It's a waste of Microsoft resources.

The real problem is that many of the "tech elite" that run tech sites are Mac guys now, and they complain when their niche OS isn't compatible with everything out there - which makes it seem like there's more people that want this than there really is.

I for one owned an original Zune and I loved it, but the lack of Mac support made me give away my Zune and go back to iPods, particularly the iPod touch. For me Parallels and Fusion both didn't sync the Zune correctly, and booting into Windows every single time I wanted to add a new song was too much.

Just my two cents. :)
