At 14mm thick it's only a touch thicker than a biro, and it's not too wide (63mm), tall (113mm) or heavy (152g) either. Despite the fact that it's the same size on paper as the BlackBerry 8800 this just feels slimmer - in fact the closest phone I can think of to the 201 in terms of pocketability (or should I say handbag friendliness) is Samsung's i600, but this i-Mate beats it hands down in terms of its chic appeal. The 201 is also a very tactile device. The whole chassis is coated in that lovely rubbery, soft-touch plastic which, as well as feeling soft and smooth under your fingertips, also means when you're typing away on its QWERTY keyboard it feels secure in your hands, unlike a number of soap-bar phones I could mention."

A year and a half ago I would have picked i-Mate as the smartphone company to watch out for. For a short time they had some pretty cool devices. Here we are in the present time and I have to say I'm not as impressed. Their devices seem plain, unattractive, and boring. Where's the innovative design? Where's the ground breaking cool features? So now we have the Jamo 201 reviewed by Trusted Reviews. How does it fare? You'll have to click on over and read for yourself. By the sheer look of it, I say "yawn". Looking at it for about 10 minutes before bedtime should give me a good night's sleep. So how many of you are beginning to feel like me? You're ready for something all together radically new?

I know I have been bit out of the WinMo news circle, but when did the i-mate get this out the door? But then, why did they put it out the door - no 3G, and no Quad-band!

Kris, Pete,

We have to take this into the right proportion. i-mate has decided to divide its line into 2 product lines, the Ultimate and the Jama.

While the Ultimate will be the series containing all the cool stuff, the JAMA will be the entry level phone, for all people that want a low-cost converged PDA that gives them PIM and push-mail.

I have held in my hands two days ago the Ultimate 9502, the Ultimate 8502, the JAMA 101 and the Jama 201. This is what I have to say:

1. the Ultimate devices are brilliant. Finally i-mate managed to bring out devices that are stable, have all the important stuff for techies and 3G users, and have a build quality that I can't say one bad word about it.

2. the JAMA devices do what they are supposed to, and have a build quality that doesn't fall from that of their Ultimate big brothers. And they will cost about half its price.

So after the ugly JAQ and JAQ3, and after cancelling the two first Ultimate devices since their build was so bad that nobody wanted to touch it, it seems that i-mate has finally converged to a point in which they have a message again for this market, both for the technical-savvy and for the entry-level users.

My two cents.

Thank heliod. I can now understand what the company was thinking.
