If you ever wanted to know anything, and I mean anything about HD DVD sales, check it out. Highlights: most HD DVD releases are exclusives, VC-1 is the most common encoding format (making storage capacity a moot point), and Dolby Digital + is the most common audio format. Universal and Warner seem to be the biggest studios behind the HD DVD format.

Hehe, on the other hand if you look at all the hd "rips" on the net, AVC is the more popular format. Course I think that may have to do with ffmpeg/coreAVC support. I don't recall ffmpeg supporting VC1, cause for PC it is part of the MS video 9 codec, and who wants to use that? ;)

I like avc, though saddly my laptop is not quite powerfull enough for 1080p stuff, but everything 720p looks gorgeous.

The Codec spread is because of the availability of professional grade tools for VC-1. MS has been pushing VC-1 for digital cinema, among other things, so they've made sure that mastering tools were available ages ago. H.264 on the other hand won't be getting final versions of high-grade mastering tools till this summer/fall. That's why BD launched with MPEG2 content (Sony would rather die than use VC-1) although the need to justify the extra capacity of BluRay was also a factor.
I'm a bit surprised there is *any* HD-DVD content in MPEG2 but then again none is from the major studios.
