You can get an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ for as little as $80, and only the 6000+ top model exceeds $200. Intel's Core 2 Duo family struts past the Athlon line with the faster products, but you should carefully consider the price premium before purchasing. Since AMD cannot attack Intel in the high-end or the upper mainstream, it dropped prices, so you might get more bang for the buck with AMD. On June 5th it introduced new mainstream CPUs to strike Intel where it is really vulnerable: the low power desktop segment.

Read between the dotted lines here folks: low power = less heat. Perfect for media center applications. These should make for some fast, powerful, but very quiet HTPCs in the living room. Can't wait to get my hands on one and see just how silent they can run.

nice. I'm a gamer, but frankly I am tired of my hot noisy pc's. I switched to lcd's and it has helped alot, but if I can get my game on with something cooler, I'm all for it.

So a slower cpu runs cooler? Who would have thought. Maybe this is the start of a new fad, Underclocking....

Ok, couldn't resist being a smart a!!. Sorry.

underclocking I believe loses more speed vs heat. and slow cpu's do not allways run cooler. My old slow cpus run just as hot as todays fastest cpus. So I get less heat if I buy a real fast cpu designed to run cooler, then underclocking a blazing cpu to just be fast.

So a slower cpu runs cooler?

No, it's about the wattage: the more power a CPU sucks up, the hotter it gets.
