<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://news.digitaltrends.com/article12556.html' target='_blank'>http://news.digitaltrends.com/article12556.html</a><br /><br /></div><i>"The market for flash-based solid state disk drives which act as drop-in replacements for traditional hard drives used in mobile and portable devices is heating up: Samsung announced today that it plans to ship a 64 GB solid state drive in the second quarter of this year. The announcement comes on the heels of SanDisk announcing a 32 GB flash drive only a couple weeks ago, and Fujitsu announcing solid state drives as an option in selected LifeBook portable computers. Not only does Samsung's new offering increase the capacity available in solid state drives, it increases the performance as well. Samsung claims the respective read and write performance on the drive have been increased by 20 and 60 percent: the 64 GB unit can read 64 MB/S, write 45 MB/s, and consumes just half a Watt when operating (one tenth of a Watt when idle)."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/1175015178_500-64GB-18inch-SSD.jpg" /><br /><br />64GB is just an incredible amount of space in such a small form factor with the speed that it supports. I would love to see all cameras have one of these bad boys built in for videos as well as RAW images storage. Of course, then having wi-fi built in to then move that data off rapidly and easily would also be cool, but one dream at a time. :)

hehe, the size is pretty amazing. But at those speeds, it has to cost a pretty penny. 20Mbyte/sec SDs are still at a premium price point.

It's amazing how quickly Flash-based hard drives like this are ramping up development...32 GB is pretty small, but 64 GB is a match for many laptop hard drives today. It will be great to see what kind of price points these are at near the end of the year for holiday seasons...

From the look of the size it might be available in a PCMCIA form factor. I would like to be able to add that kind of storage to my existing laptop.

I don't think that's the case - I believe both the Samsung and the SanDisk product is designed to fit into a standard 2.5" drive bay.
