The primary issue is the somewhat disappointing picture quality when using HDMI cables...The second issue I had was the heat generated by the little box. With my first Apple TV, I measured temps ranging from 95F to 105F when resting, and around 110F when the Apple TV was playing movies off its internal hard drive."</i><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/02-AppleTV-after-playing-fo.jpg" /> <br /><br />From the various tear-downs of the Apple TV that I've seen, it looks like Apple has designed the outer casing of the Apple TV as a cooling device. How effective it is remains to be seen. That's a lot of horsepower to pack into a small package, and apparently it's running hotter than many other consumer electronics devices. Only time will tell how those temperatures will affect long-term durability.

What he fails to tell us in the article is what the room temperature was. It regularly gets to be 95 degrees F in my house in the summer, and if it's averaging 98 degrees in sleep mode in a 70-degree room, it's going to fry itself during our first heat wave. :!:

It should be noted here (in case people don't click through) that he raves about the quality once he swapped out the old unit.

Is 44C *really* hot enough to be worried about? The GPU in my laptop averages 72C when at idle, and the system isn't set to throw a warning until it achieves 95C.

Surely it it's only an issue if it gets hot enough to burn someone? Doubt any technical problems would be exhibiting unless you doubled or even tripled the temperature. Hardly healthy on your electricity bill though!!

That's the outside case temperature, much hotter than a conventional PC. Temperature at the chip level could be as much as double that. 8O

Well, I'm sure as hell not visiting YOUR house this summer then. 8O

Dude, just pay your utility bills already!

For the record, we do have A/C. Too bad it only cools a one-meter radius around it. :? During the summer months I regularly have to shut down my equipment between the hours of 12 and 5pm. Even water cooling can only drop the CPU temps to room temperature...

When I bought my Xbox the clerk said "The number one reason we get these returned is overheating." 8O We'll see how well it holds up this summer.
