View Full Version : Extender Suggestion

Just got a Windows Vista (Home Premium) laptop and so far I like the new OS. This is my primary machine but also use it as music player and DVD player by physically connecting it to my Zvox speakers or my Sharp Aquos 32" LCD.
I am interested in taking advantage of WMC and was wondering whether I can have a set-up where at least my music can be streamed wirelessly (I have a wi-fi router). I read somewhere that there are currently no Vista-compatible media extenders so what are my options for now?
I would like to keep the cost low :) and the set-up fairly simple.
Thanks for any thoughts or ideas.

The Xbox 360 is a Vista compatible media center extender, and can go wireless with the wireless adapter. Check it out.

Jeremy,
Thanks for your reply. I've been reading up on the 360 as extender and I was wondering if you (or anyone else) may know the answer to a couple more questions: 1) If my router is next to the 360, I can have a wired connection (i.e., no need for the wireless adapter)? 2) Would I be able to steam my subscription music?
It seems this is my only option right now but am a little hesistant about getting an Xbox since I am not a gamer at all. Maybe the Vista media extenders will come soon...

The 360 has an ethernet port, so yes, a wired connection would work just fine. Better, in fact, as it would also allow you to stream high definition tv and video as well.
You'll be able to use any subscription music that uses Play For Sure, i.e. Napster etc.
You won't find Vista MCX's anytime soon, at least not for a price less than the 360 already is, as they're going to require beefier hardware (faster processors, more memory, etc.). The 360 really is the perfect Media Center Extender for Vista.

There's really a lack of extenders on the market today - supposedly there are more coming this year (2007) but at the moment the Xbox 360 is perhaps the best option there is.

Although just as a warning - I've had a lot of trouble (read no luck at all) getting my Xbox 360 to interface with my Vista Home Premium laptop. Quite a few other people on the forums on Xbox.com have reported similar problems.

Hrmm - I guess I've been fortunate then, I had no problem at all getting them working together...

Lucky you, Jason - wish it was the same for me :(
Here's the thread I was referring to - http://forums.xbox.com/10245070/ShowPost.aspx
