It has a new 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-H size) with Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System and a 3.0-inch LCD monitor with Canon's Live View technology. The 1D Mark III has a redesigned 100% viewfinder, a new 45-point AF system, and can shoot up to 10 fps continuously with a maximum burst of 110 shots. Dual DIGIC III Image Processors work in tandem to speed up every process while refining image quality; a new, lighter body has improved weather sealing and shutter durability. Every facet of the EOS experience has been enhanced with the 1D Mark III. It's the new standard."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/1dmk3_586x225.gif" /><br /><br />This is officially my dream camera. I mean honestly, this is it. I want it!!! The 10.1MP is just scratching the surface. It is the burst mode, the wireless, the GPS tagging and the live LCD that are the awesome killer features. The only thing that sucks is the likely ridiculous price. It is probably going to be around $4K (at the very least) since the Mark II is currently available for around $3.3K. Time to win the lottery. :)

Jerry, you're INSANE. I think you need to give more money to charity or something, you seem to have too much of it.

This is one SWEET camera. 10fps is amazing, though you'd have to be an action junkie to really say you need that...the 45 point AF system is awesome though, no one can argue with getting photos that have a higher chance of being in focus no matter how crazy your shooting gets.

I thought at first that the "Live View" technology they mentioned meant that we were finally seeing a DSLR with a dedicated front-facing sensor that would be used for live LCD previews and even (yes) video capture on a DSLR. But it seems not:

http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/eos20da/catalog/index02.html

They do a trick with keeping the mirror up...which would have a hit on the battery and maybe cause more dust issues, right? The self-cleaning would seem to address that though.

All in all, QUITE the camera. But it makes me no less happy with my D200. :D

Jerry, you're INSANE.

Yeah and?

Well I do have the 5D and 1D to sell so it will work out close to even.

Man... I think I just wet myself. I've had a hard time comming up with a good reason to upgrade from my 10D.... I think I just found one. I have a feeling that your 4K price tag might be a little lacking. I'm betting on 5K or more. Hmm... maybe I'll have to skip lunch today to start saving... :)

I've seen the 4k figure on a few of the review sites too. I'm betting it will be around there.

So long 5D.

Dual DIGIC processors?! - Wow.

The specs don't say if that speed (10fps) w/ a 110 shot buffer are for raw as well - I'm guessing not but it's insanely impressive nonetheless.

I do remember reading that it was for JPGs. But you can get 30 RAW images in burst mode if I recall correctly. I am not looking the stats up now so don't quote me on it.

Jerry, what the hell?!!! You have a 5D AND 1D? And now you are gonna get the 1D Mark III?! This is craziness. (Translation - I am extremely jealous). I wonder what lenses you have.

No, no, that's JERRY that has the 5D and 1D. CAMERON has the 5D and 20D.

Both are camera crazy though.

A little craziness is a good thing.

Um, am I the only one who thinks it sucks that it's got an APS-H sized sensor? That's still a 1.3x factor on your lenses. The self-cleaning sensor is nice though.

I'll stick with my 5D thanks :)

Ok, so someone at work just told me the 1Ds Mark III is also coming out soon and it'll be full frame. Now that'll be the baby to get!

Twice the price at least though. The 1.3 factor doesn't bother me much, at least not $4000 much.

Live view by itself is a bloody waste of time. The good part is that it seems to work in tethered/wireless mode, which allows for remote captures.

Naff bits:

Joystick can't be used to select AF points.

Nice upgrades:

+2 FPS, +2 Megapixels.

Good bits:

19 Cross Sensors.

Li-ion battery (finally).

Dust cleaning.

You and me Jerry :) I've already got my name on one and a potential buyer for my Mk2.

I'm mixed on that fact (the APS-H sensor).

It's been interesting how I've had to rethink my shooting while using the 5D - you have to be careful when shooting wide open as you get vignetting - and I've noticed a bit of chromatic aberration and softness in the corners on my 17-40. Not enough to really bug me mind you (it's not even noticeable unless pixel peeping - so arguably it doesn't even matter).

Both are camera crazy though.

I prefer lens crazy - as I'll probably pick up a few new lenses before I get a new camera (I'm lusting after the 400 f2.8 - but it's way to expensive, so I may just settle for the 45 Tilt Shift). I probably won't actually upgrade to the MKIII for a while, having just had the 5D since October. I've been pretty happy with the 5D, with the exception of the sensor which seems to get dirtier a lot easier than the 20D - so I am looking forward to seeing how well the new sensor cleaning system works.

I'm with you on lens crazy, Cameron. And I agree, there's pretty bad vignetting with the 17-40L. But that's the lens, not the 5D. I had the same problem using the 17-40L on my film body. And the vignetting is pretty easily fixed up in post processing using Lightroom. Here's an example, taken at 19mm: http://www.clearviewphotography.net/gallery/2327766#121770886.

The upside is that 17mm really is 17mm :)

I rented the 45mm T/S this weekend to give it a spin. Man oh man it was a lot of fun. I've had my eye on a Hartblei Superrortator (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/hartblei45.shtml) for months. It's way cheaper than the Canon T/S, has more options for movement, and apparently has decent image quality. For the amount of time I'd use the lens it's hard for me to justify the cost of the Canon version. It's available in a 65, 80 and I think a 35mm version.

I have a feeling that the 17-40 is going to disappear and that a 16-35 is going to appear in its place.

On the Superrotator - it looks really interesting. More movements than the Canon - although it becomes a completely manual lens (not a big deal though). I wish something like that was available for my 6x7 gear. The price doesn't seem that much better though - $1k for the Hartblei vs. $1100 for the Canon 45 TS.

They do have a pretty inexpensive MF slide projector though - I'll have to ask them if it does 6x7.

The Canon TS is full manual focus as well. Make sure you look at pricing for the Canon mount lenses, not the medium format, and that it's not the Zeiss glass version, when you check out the rotators. The 80mm 2.8/80mm is $499. The 35mm is $539. I believe the 80mm with Zeiss glass is around $900.

The dude that sells them in the US has his site back up: www.kievcamera.net (make sure it's .net not .com, or you'll get in trouble with the work police :)

This is close to my dream camera... it is only missing two things:

GPS - To record the location of each picture as part of the metadata
WiFi - To transfer pictures wirelessly to a computer

I know that Canon offers a WiFi add-on, but it is expensive. Adding GPS and WiFi really wouldn't increase production cost much and would be a huge selling point.

I think the only thing I'd want (that the competition has) is a wireless flash transmitter (i.e. pocket wizard compatible) built-in. I'm pretty sure the pro-level Nikons have that. At this point that's the only place I can think of off the top of my head (I'm sure I'm missing something though) where Nikon has Canon beat after this offering.
