When in doubt, ask the friendly and knowledgeable folks who visit DMT...

The GF and I are taking a trip to Mexico at the end of the month. I have my Pocket PC and PSP for entertainment; she has a portable DVD player, but I think taking that, with all the accessories and discs, would be kind of a pain. So, I'm wondering what thoughts others might have about an appealing alternative...

She's probably more interested in video than music, so video-capable music players (like the Zune or, God forbid, iPod) are probably not what I'm looking for. I've always been impressed by what Archos makes, although I've never used one (and the 504 40GB player, with the docking station for TV-recording, is available at the local Target for $370). I love my iRiver music players, but it doesn't look like they're still making any PMPs.

So, any suggestions, anyone?

OK, if there aren't any PMPs that are worth mentioning, should I just go ahead and consider a Zune or similar music-player-with-video?

Well I have never used Archos players but have played around with them in the stores. I like their build quality and menus.

I have used a older RCA Lyra PMP. At the time I didn;t know what I do now and found it hard to convert video for it. It played Divx. I then purchased a Samsung Portable Media Center. THis was very easy to use. Hooked right up and windows media player or media center would convert almost any video I threw at it. I'd hook it up before I went to bed and the next day I'd have a device full of video.

If you are looking for ease I would look for an old Samsung, Iriver, or Creative PMC. They can be had for very cheap. But If I was buying one right now, I would go with the Archos.
