View Full Version : Zen Vision:W Kicked To The Curb

Remember how I went ahead and ordered the Zen Vision:W (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/index.php?topic_id=11606), despite what most people said in the discussion about it me not needing it? Well, I've decided to send it back to Dell (http://www.jasondunn.com/returning-products-to-dell-i-discovered-something-new-139) - not because I don't need a device like that; rather, I've found the Zen Vision:W to be less than impressive in person. It's hard to sum up why I don't like it as much as I thought I would, but I think it comes down to the fact that the engineering on it just isn't that impressive.

Get it? The sad panda versus Creative's happy panda? (http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=210&subcategory=211&product=15752)

The 30 GB Archos 604 (http://www.archos.com/products/video/archos_604/tech_specs.html?country=global&lang=en) is only 17mm thick, while the 30 GB Zen Vision:W is 22mm thick. That's 30% thicker for a device with the same sized screen and hard drive. The 60 GB Zen Vision:W is 26.4mm thick, which is just monstrous. I found that when I took it with me to CES, it was just too big. It doesn't include a kick-stand, so I had to hold it up to my face the whole time I was watching videos on it. The screen was great, ripped DVDs looked impressive, but the control pad felt cheap and was irritating to use after a while. Because I already have a great solution (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,11492) for storing photos while travelling, I don't need the built-in CF card slot.

The Archos units look good, but the company wasn't at CES so I wasn't able to make any contacts - and they've refused to send us review units in the past. I've got my eye on the Sandisk Pocket Video Player (http://tinyurl.com/ya5bxp) (what an uninspired product name!) for a few reasons: it's only 16.9mm thick, has a 4" screen, is Flash-based (better battery life), has a built-in speaker, is PlaysForSure so should sync my Media Center TV shows, and has an SD card slot for memory expansion. Sure, it's only got 8 GB of storage space (12 GB if I slap a 4 GB SD card in there, which I will) but that's enough space for a dozen TV shows or movies with enough space left over for some photos and music. I really like the SD card slot, because you can bet we'll see 6 GB or 8 GB SD cards out this year - and the player can expand storage easily. It sounds like a good fit for my needs - thin, big screen - but we'll see how it measures up when I review it (which won't be for a few months since the Pocket Video Player isn't available yet).

I have to ask . . . why this instead of a Zune? Other than needing a headset shouldn't it handle those tasks?

HEHEHEHEHE

Hey... A certain person (cough Jason cough) got annoyed with me for saying it was too big...

I love Jason but I've earned at least a small "I told ya so" here... :rock on dude!:

From an earlier post:

"What about the Zune you might ask? The 3 inch screen is a decent size, but their idiotic software resizes images to 640 x 480 then scales it to 50% on the screen resulting in poor-quality images. Yes, I can re-size the images myself, but it's an added hassle. The the limited codec support on the Zune makes it a poor choice for many types of video content. I remain a big fan of my Zen Vision:M, so I'm leaning toward the Zen Vision:W. This isn't one of those "must have" purchases, it's one of those "I'd like to have one of these" purchases - I've wanted a nice, big-screen media player for a couple of years now, but I can't seem to decide which one is a better choice - the Zen Vision or the Zen Vision:W."

Further, I really want something with built-in speakers...

Was it over IM or in the thread? Because I don't see you saying that anywhere...

No matter. I didn't think it was too big overall just too THICK - guess I should have carved a life-size replica out of butter or something.

OT: If you hold your head just right, the angel over the panda's head in Creative's image (http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=210&subcategory=211&product=15752) looks like a fish. :P

Being burned as an early adopter of Archos products, I tend to stay away from them. Though their new players look very sleek, their early mp3 jukebox players (sleek in the beginning) seemed to be riddled with problems after a few monhts of use. The Sandisk PVP looks great however. I saw it on their website some time ago and was also disappointed that it won't be available for awhile. It looked like the perfect Ipod killer. I wound up settling for their smaller Sandisk E280 player which is great for the features in such a small package! Uses micro sd cards which hopefully will break the 2 gig barrier soon  I'll just have to wait for Jason's review of it's big brother or one of his giveaways from his toy box full of gadgets!

...

8GB SD cards have been available since well over 6 months now. I saw some on ebay around last June already.

I just did a quick search on ebay now which just returned 22 results including some 4 GB (Kingston & ADATA) and 8 GB (ADATA) SDHC cards, like these "A-DATA Super SDHC 2.0 memory card" (e.g. item 320072047933; sorry no direct link as my account is in French)

Great to see Sandisk doing the right move to support standard slots vs sub-standard ones. (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10533&highlight=substandard)
