Sunday introduced a single DVD player that supports both next-generation, high-definition DVD formats, offering a solution in an escalating war between Blu-ray and HD DVD. At a news conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, LG said its Super Multi Blu Player would be available in early February in the United States for about $1,200. A computer drive would be available in the first quarter for about the same price. "Most of the consumers felt they are confused ... reluctant to buy the (separate HD DVD or Blu-ray) player," said Michael Ahn, head of LG's North American operations. "Growth was much slower than it could be and that is a concern in the industry. We recognized the consumer needed something more." He said the combination player could handle the interactive features of Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray format, which includes looking at menus while a movie is playing."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/rsm.ces.preview.story.jpg" /><br /><br />I guess it was only a matter of time that a dual-technology player was released. It will, of course, set you back around $1200. I wonder what the price of the recorder version of this system will be.

Doesn't either Blue Ray or HD DVD require a license that forbids manufacturers from producing opposing format players?

This oughta be interesting, and if nothing else could end up with LG getting its rights to use Blue Ray or HD DVD revoked...

Samsung BD Player $700 + Toshiba HDDVD Player $500 = $1200

If it doesn't really do everything as well as individual players, you're not doing anything but saving some AV cabinet real estate. Certainly not any cheaper to buy this one over buying separate players individually ($100 more than if your BD player is a 60GB PS3).

Xbox 360 Premium $399 + HD-DVD Attachment $199 + PS3 $599 = $1,197

You can play both formats and have two gaming systems.
