At least, from the standpoint of a mini MP3 player, it's probably the best that money can buy. Miniature MP3 players are the stuff of a Lilliputian's dreams. In fact, the smaller, the more geek envy it would draw. The newest iPod shuffle is like that. So is Shiro's cube-shaped AD. They drew more raves for their form factors than their features. But the iriver S10 made the waves when it was first announced due to the ingenious way it melded a screen and the D-Click system onto a 42 x 30 x 10.8mm-sized body."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/iriver_s10_240.jpg" /> <br /><br />Another sweet product from iRiver. It is nice to see a someone other than Apple come up with a relatively innovative navigation system. I did get a chuckle from the fact that even in a player this size, a battery life of 8 hours is considered short.

Doesn't matter. No one's gonna buy it.

Only people with discerning taste in sound quality and performance. Those "pod people" who value fashion over quality will stick with their iPoops.

Enough people must be buying them (iRiver products in general). I'd think they would have pulled out of the market by now if they were not making a profit. I've been a satisfied iRiver owner for years and praise the merits of the iRiver to all my iPod owning peers.

Egads, let us try to elevate the level of discussion please.
The first person who says 'they started it' will get a stern look.

So, why won't people buy it?

Why is this design *not* considered stylish when that seems to be its design goal?

And why does Batman wear tights? Would he even need his utility belt if he just went for a pair of pants with cargo pockets?

From a gadget standpoint I am interested in it (new shiney) but there is nothing wrong with my current player so I don't think it has enough oomph to make me switch.

No one's going to buy it because:

1. It's not considered "cool"
2. Because iRiver is not considered an A-List brand by about 90% of the uninformed general populace.
3. Because people with normal sized hands are not going to buy a device that they can't comfortably hold.
4. Because once the novelty wears off, there isn't a whole lot left here for the average consumer.
5. Because it only has 8 hours of battery life.
6. Because the included software won't rip an MP3 meaning you have to rip it somewhere else and move it, or rip an Ogg or WMA file (which is a downside for the average consumer).
7. Because people who know iRiver know there will be another model, with enhanced features, released after they walk out the door.

I still say the only devices that use WM that are worth owning at this moment are made by Sandisk and soon to be Microsoft / Toshiba. This one is a novelty as much as the Mobiblu Cube is a novelty. I mean, honestly, how many cubes have you ever seen?

I judge a device's success by how many I see on my commute. The iRiver devices I see are all the older school triangle shaped ones, but everyone has either an iPod or a portable CD player with the occasional Creative device thrown in. iRiver is not a factor based on my informal observations. I see nothing in this device compelling enough to change that. It's an interesting concept, though, and one that could be really cool at some point, but frankly a 2 Gig player that's probably going to be in the $100-$150 range isn't really that exciting.

I don't agree!!

I really like the design of this one.... If people could step outside of the box of iPod, they will see the world of great players available.

Just because iriver products are less demanding than ipod doesnt mean all iriver products all junks. Go compare ipod shuffle with iriver flash players, iriver flash players are a lot better.

I'll buy one, but it is not available in US.

I guess iRiver only want to focus on the Clix in this moment and I don't think the new player will be available soon.

They carry a lot of iRiver Products which are not available in US. It's my favor source for buying the import model iRiver players. I got my e10 a while ago. For the price/sound quality, it's still hard to beat. The sound quality of the iRiver is still very promising. I’m sure the new s10 will do the same.

I have been using iRiver since H100 series. For music enjoyment, iRiver has been my A list all the time. Most of people are still using the orginal earbuds. Without a good earbuds/headphones, it's hard to tell the different between a good player or bad player.

iRiver doesn't know how to do marketing! This is the real problem.

3. Because people with normal sized hands are not going to buy a device that they can't comfortably hold.

it depends! i believe girls may not need something which can comfortably hold. They just need something small............

5. Because it only has 8 hours of battery life.

For battery life, I cannot complain for the size w LCD display. This player may not be the best solution for daily use. However, it may be the perfect player for Gym.
