I'm still learning how this thing works but that is most of the fun. You can see I have already added a lens, well actually two of them.

Good stuff! What lenses did you get for it Jerry?

I got the one you see on the camera which is the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 Image Stabilizer lens. I also got a 75-300mm f/4-5.6. That one doesn't have IS but it was just too darn expensive with it. The one that came wth the camera is a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6.
I'm still a noob at this but why do all those lenses have such narrow f ranges? I remember when I had film SLRs years ago most lenses were like 1.5 or something to 16. I also noted when taking pictures with the 30D that I could stop down to 22. Is the camera doing the magic here?
I am having a blast learning about this camera I must say.

Cool! I'll have to leave the lens questions for one of our lens experts here; I never owned a film SLR and can't imagine how/why a lens would go to f/16...

Thanks! I had telephoto lenses that would stop down to f/22.

Thanks! I had telephoto lenses that would stop down to f/22.
f/22? That would mean very, very little light would pass through the lens.
Is this the one you bought?

I think the lens measurement is simply the best-case scenario: meaning that at no zoom, the best it can do is f/4, while at maximum zoom the best it can manage is f/5.6. Were old lenses measured in different ways?

Yeah that was the case. The longer the telephoto was in those old lenses the more it could be stopped down. I had a 400mm that was 5.6-22 I think.
These are the lenses I got:

and

This last one is what comes with the camera:

Nice selections... a friend of mine with the drebel XT decided to go for a similar zoom with IS (but not very 'fast' aperature, like f4 I think). Interesting how IS redefines the traditional lens evaluation.
Personally I'll opt for a faster f2 or 2.8 lens the next time I can buy one... even if it has to be a Sigma prime :)

A lens I would highly recomend adding to this camera is the Canon 50/1.8 lens. It's a nice, very fast lens for a very nice price. I love this lens.
