<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.ati.com/technology/avivo/' target='_blank'>http://www.ati.com/technology/avivo/</a><br /><br /></div><i>"ATI’s new Avivo™ Video Converter is the fast and easy way to transform your videos to play on today’s new breed of portable entertainment devices. The Avivo Video Converter is a “transcoder,” a tool that converts digital video from one file format to another, enabling the same video clip to play on industry standard home DVD/DivX® players, PC’s or portable media devices such as the Apple® iPod®, Sony® portable gaming device, Creative® Zen™ and many others. Did we mention how fast it is? ATI’s Avivo Video Converter can take a 30 minute recorded show, and convert it into a format playable by an iPod in less than 5 minutes. It can cut the conversion time by 80% or more. When compared to competitive solutions, the Avivo Video Converter easily beats them. This means you’ll be watching more, and waiting less."</i><br /><br />Apparently in the v.6.6 release of the Catalyst drivers, there's Avivo transcoding technology for Media Center Edition 2005 computers - but I'll be darned if I can find it anywhere on the ATI site. I've got to give ATI credit though, they're enhancing the value of their hardware with this Avivo push, whereas NVIDIA still wants to charge you $$$ for their MPEG2 DVD decoder.

Previous versions of AVIVO have been built into the Catalyst drivers... you have to start Catalyst Control Center in basic mode, and the video conversion is presented as an option. Are you sure the MCE transcoding functionality isn't similarily included already?

I have no clue - I don't have an ATI card that can use these drivers, I'm 90% NVIDIA.

I'll check it out next week then... I've got a venerable Radeon 9600 Pro, somehow just under the compatibility line (9800 and up) for Vista MCE. Grr. At some point it will be cheaper to just buy an xbox 360 rather than to upgrade my MCE box to support Vista

...see how useful justification can be sometimes?

It is available for MCE, as a seperate download, however it's only for the X1000 series cards, I belive.

Go to www.ati.com and then select support and downloads. From there select the correct operating system and hardware. the Avivo is available for PCI Express cards only I think. The link for the software update lists which cards will work. The same is true for selecting a card for use with MCE machines. I have had no problems with ATI's products. Make sure you select dowmloads from ATI's site and not from Windows update though.

seemingly i have a 9800 pro as the primary and a 1300 as a secondary and reinstalled the drivers with the avivo setup too, and it did NOT show up.

i used the above link and changed the regkey and it did show up.... so i'm thinking a x1* card need to be primary and a complete overhaul on the drivers in order for the avivo to show up.

I did some conversions and well... complexing issue... it appears that if i set it to medium quality it's larger in size than High quality for WMV. It's about 75% original size for High quality and only 50% for Low (Medium resulted in about 90%).

Testing on MCE they play almost ok... there is a little pause when shifting times. The quality is near the same, though i haven't tested on multiple settings. I took a Fair show with hardly any action, so it may not be the best choice to judge.

The shows don't show up in Recorded TV but with a search in My Videos come up just fine. I'll have to have another partition because it'll show DRV-MS files too if set on the same folder.

also i can't test it with MCE but this thread has some addtional info.
