These systems have a number of advantages, but compactness is not one of them; while finding a place to put the subwoofer may not be that hard, carrying it around can be. If you move around a great deal, a stereo system with no subwoofer will obviously be more practical, and admittedly, certain types of music need a subwoofer less than others. Finally, you may want a system that doesn't bother the people around you but still puts out quality sound. If you need simplicity, portability and more control over how much sound is produced by your speakers, the two systems we've tested here may interest you."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/intro.jpg" /><br /><br />While you really need a sub for full sound, if you are looking for something small with passable sound quality, this review of speakers from Klipsch and Creative will be of interest to you.

weve gone years without subwoofers.. and they are still not used in may applications like theatres and stages that instead rely on high quality whoofers. IMO a quality 3 way will give the best balance (well, it maqkes it easier to get balance, since all the sounds are coming from the same spot. Also low frequency is kept in stereo rather then mixed to mono). But in size I think sub whoofers excel. I cant stick 2+ speakers with giant whoofers on my desk. I can stick a bunch of small satalite speakers on it and the sub under the desk.
