The article got me thinking and after considering the possibilities for a while, maybe it isn't such a far fetched idea. The recent announcements by Apple are significant and it's clear that the market is changing quickly. We've already speculated on how the Playstation 3 could be the death of Sony, but what if it really happened? Is it possible that Microsoft might need to buy Sony to extend its business beyond software? We'll take a look at a few product categories and speculate on how Microsoft could enhance their position with a Sony acquisition."

As far as I'm concerned this is a nice exercise in speculative thought, but that's about it. MS buying Sony is about as likely as Fox buying the WB, IMO. Sure, Fox may be losing out to its arch-rival, but acquiring an already-struggling business that is only marginally related to theirs would just be silly. Ditto with MS and Sony. I'm not saying it'll never happen, I just think it's highly unlikely. In any case, the article brings up some interesting points. There are indeed a few areas that Sony does well at that MS just falls flat in. Would acquiring Sony help MS in their uphill battle against Apple in the digital media realm? Maybe. Personally, I think we should all play nice and Apple should stick to PMPs and MS should stick to the MCE living room experience. There's no reason why they couldn't coexist...

Interesting, but highly unlikely. The Japanese government would never approve such an acquisition. Sony is a cultural icon to Japan, and a symbol of pride. To lose Sony would be a disgrace as well as an economic loss. More to the point, Japanese culture...zenophobic as it is, would never allow Sony to be acquired by "Gaijin". I was stunned enough when Sony named Howard Stringer as CEO. You know things were bad internally if the board chose a foreigner to head the company.
