Well look what showed up via courier today: my Nikon 18-200 lens (http://www.nikon.ca/products/afs-dx-vr-zoom-18-200/), the SB-600 flash (http://www.nikon.ca/products/sb600/), and a spare battery for the D200. Exciting stuff! But it's all just a cruel tease because I'm still waiting for my D200. I have an order placed with Henry's and DV Shop (both based in Toronto), and whoever gets me the camera first gets my money. I just called Henry's and they say my name is near the top of the list so I should be seeing it within the next two weeks. Awesome! I'm so excited. DV Shop says I'm #1 on their waiting list, but only because no one else is on the list and they haven't seen a D200 come their way in quite a while. That's not good news, even if they're $100 CND cheaper than Henry's. What DV Shop does have, however, is the Tokina 12-24 lens (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/digital-wide-zooms/comparison.htm) that I want to buy. Unfortunately, as of yesterday they're sold out on the Tokina, and don't expect any in for two weeks. Man, this is hard work getting everything I need!

[photo taken with my Canon Digital Rebel - I wonder if it feels betrayed?]

The 18-200 is some heavy glass! I was surprised at how heavy the lens is (I've never held it by itself), but then again, that's some serious min to max zoom, so there's a lot of glass in there. The SB-600 flash is quite light, I was surprised - once I add the batteries it will gain some heft. And now, I go back to waiting...

Has anyone else had a particularly painful waiting experience where you've wanted a piece of technology so badly, but have had to wait weeks or months for all the pieces to come together?

I had the same thing when I ordered my Olympus kit. The telezoom, the spare battery and the UV filters were available, but the DSLR itself (in a kit with walkaround zoom and flash) took two extra weeks. Waiting for the rest was pretty difficult. But congratulations on the first arrivals of your new kit!

Does my Xbox 360 count?

My pre-order was placed in December, and over the past three months, I've had multiple accessories and games come my way, but still no console. It was supposed to be released on March 2, but it got pushed back to March 23. Anyway, only 5 days to go now, and I'm hoping the cruel wait I've had to endure will be worth it.

Wow, that's tough. It will be worth the wait though. I've had my 360 for about a month now, and I absolutely love it.

My grueling wait was a few years ago when the new Mirror Dual Drive Powermac G4s were just introduced. I ordered my PowerMac along with a 17" Apple flatpanel on the day of the keynote. the LCD arrived a few days later... the PowerMac? It took a month....

A few months after the WTC attacks, I purchased a custom configured HP Pavilion notebook. These were (maybe still are) built in China. The first wait was bad enough at about two weeks. Then I got notification of its shipping direct to me from China. Normally, this saves time. However, everything FedEx brought in to the US with that shipment was held by customs for special clearance. It sat in a warehouse in Indianapolis for a full month before it was finally cleared and continued on to me.

Heh, Jason, you'll need to gain some muscle in the future, methinks. Good glass isn't light (unless they're small primes). :P

An expensive way of shaving some weight off would be to use AA Lithiums for the flash. :P Oh, and hope you're using NiMH AAs.

I've got to wait until the end of the month until I can order my replacement work laptop - a Dell D820.

I've got to wait until NAB in April to find out what Matrox are going to release for the consumer to do HDV work in.

I've got to wait until November now, so it would seem, for Vista.

Somewhere in there, I've got to get myself a new video editing computer but I've just gotta be patient :-(

I built my own MCE and that was a month long ordeal. I'm an idiot when it comes to parts buying and got the wrong MOBO, then the wrong video card, then something else wasn't right. Sigh.

Do I see some eBay sales of slightly used Canon equipment in your future?

I am still in the Canon camp, so used equipment might be of interest. :D

Possibly...my father may purchase my Digital Rebel, but I also have a flash, 85-200 zoom lens, and a few other accessories. I'll likely post about it if and when I do put it all up on eBay.

This is a problem with all of us on the "bleeding edge."

I have had to wait for phones and MP3 players. My problem is I get locked into a certain store. I usually ask for gift certificates for gifts (birthday, Christmas) so that I can get what I want. If it is a new MP3 player I'll choose a store like Best Buy and ask everyone for that. Then if Circuit City gets the product first I'm stuck.

My current wait is for the Garmin Forerunner 305 (http://www.garmin.com/products/forerunner305/)I'm locked into buying it from REI and there have been many production delays. It was supposed to ship in Jan, and now they are saying April (after many date changes).

A friend of mine has had his D200 for about a month now and he absolutely loves it. We met for lunch a couple weeks ago and I was very impressed. While it's a beast to hold, the responsiveness is simply amazing...everything happens nearly instantaneously. I'm sure you'll enjoy your D200 when it arrives, Jason! :-)
