The D200 is a vast improvement over that camera, so much so that they're not really comparable anymore. The closest competitor is probably Canon's EOS-30D, which was just introduced. There are so many new things on the D200 that I'll just list some of the highlights. It has a new 10.2 Megapixel CCD, which is quite a jump from the 6MP sensor on the D50/D70/D100 models. The LCD display got bigger, too: it's now up to 2.5" inches and it's one of the best ones I've seen. Camera performance is also superb, from nearly instant startup speeds to its 5 frame/second burst mode. Heck, even the battery life is impressive. And of course, the D200 has all the manual controls and optional extras that make a D-SLR so desirable. I'll be covering those features and plenty more in our full D200 review, which starts right now!"</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/camera-front-angled.jpg" /><br /><br />A detailed review of the Nikon D200 - I still feel tempted. ;-)<br /><br /><b>UPDATE:</b> Ah, the mother of all reviews has been also been published, the <a href="http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond200/">dpreview Nikon D200 review</a>. There will be a lot to chew on in that review...

Isn't this about the same price the 30D will likely sell for? If so, it does make the 30D's introduction seem a bit odd. Seems like the first time Canon would have introduced something that didn't trump it's direct competition. It's probably happened before, but not often.
I've heard a few gripes here and there about portions of the Canon lens lineup. But think I've EVER heard a gripe about Nikkor lenses......that alone should make this one a worthy contender.

The 30D will be a bit less than the D200 at street price, but not much. So, yes, the 30D is a bit less exciting, especially since the D200 was announced in, what, November 2005? Canon had at least a few months to add some "wow" to the 30D. ;-)

Product development cycles being what they are, I don't think Canon could do much with a few months. :P

They've done pretty darn well with that same amount of lead time in the past. I've often wondered if they didn't have the best corporate espionage team ever known to man.:)
It does surprise me a little they didn't at least up the megapixel count to 10mp. But I guess they feared cannibalizing sales of the 5D if they did that.(?)
