Over the past few days I've been teasing out some information about some new hardware I've gotten my hands on, namely the new Raptor X hard drive (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/index.php?topic_id=9745) and the 2.13 Ghz Pentium M CPU (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/index.php?topic_id=9802). What was it all for? This beauty:

Filip Norrgard was the first (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9802&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0) to correctly put the clues together and deduce that I was putting a Shuttle XPC SD11G5 (http://global.shuttle.com/Product/Barebone/SD11G5.asp) together. He's won the $50 Vaja gift certificate (http://www.vajacases.com/affiliate&ID=100) and a Digital Media Thoughts microlight. Congratulations Filip! Shuttle sent me the SD11G5 this week, and I'm eager to put it together. As my previous comments have indicated (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/index.php?topic_id=9087), the Pentium M radically changes what's possible with a desktop computer. I'm looking forward to a machine that's fast, powerful, and most of all...quiet. I'll be publishing a full review of it in the coming weeks.

So Jason, what's the deal with the Pentium M? I'm not really up to date on processor technology these days... :P

Pentium M = roughly 27 watts under load
Pentium 4 = roughly 130 watts under load

Thus, the Pentium M is much cooler and power friendly. The big 2MB cache means it's seriously fast in comparison to the Pentium 4 at the same clock speed.

The Pentium M is the future of Intel CPUs - the Pentium 4 design is at the end of its life.

You know, I thought about getting one of these (http://sys.us.shuttle.com/BuildXPC.aspx?id=1108) a while back, but I held off for one reason or another. (Maybe it was all the negative reviews on the poor driver shape Shuttle's systems are in when they ship and the poor support)

Now I think I'll wait around and see how Jason's little project goes. I've been looking for a Media Center PC, and I'd bet the Raptor drive and Pentium M would make a nice difference. Jason, I hope you'll include a price list for those of us looking at a similar (if not identical project).

If only that case wasn't white and wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb in my entertainment center. :x

That's good stuff. I know what my next upgrade is going to be :D
Thanks for the info Jason. I really appreciate it.
