The key is the fact it uses a full-frame 12.8MP CMOS imaging device. A full-frame imager eliminates the digital factor that impacts almost all Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras (the $7,000 16.7MP Canon EOS-1 Ds Mark II is the only other exception). The EOS 5D is much smaller than the EOS-1 Ds Mark II, also adding to its appeal (28.6 ounces versus 42.9 without lens or battery)."

I think we have talked a lot about the EOS 5D here on DMT. When I played with it at Digital Life last year, it really blew me away (much like the price ;-)). It is so fast and very light. Plus, from the sample images I have seen, it is incredible. Some will argue of course that the Nikon D200 is a better camera. Anyways, I recommend reading this review, it is a nice, detailed one by DesignTechnica.

I'm a Canon guy myself. I have to say that irrespective of that, the impact of competition is obvious when you look at Canon and Nikon. They're constantly trying to one up each other, and in the end we, the consumers, are the clear winners.

Without this oneupsmanship, my Rebel XT wouldn't exist and SLR's would be way out of my reach financially.

It's a beautiful thing.
