The Toshiba is actually slightly ahead, but unfortunately it is not yet available on the market. Also, we need to make clear that the differences in performance between writers were slight, about thirty seconds at the most. The exception is in the case of dual-layer burning, where the Sony came out nearly seven minutes ahead of the competition! Still, who's interested in burning to dual-layer when the price of two single-layer DVDs is well below the cost of one dual-layer?"</i><br /><br />Tom's has a pretty detailed look at five of the most current DVD writers. Perhaps the most interesting part of the review is the fact that the biggest problem they had was in actually locating high speed media to test the drives. I'm still burning at 2x for two reasons. One, I have a pretty big stockpile of 2x discs that I got on a blowout sale and two, my DVD players tend not to like anything burned at over 2x.

I have Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-831S on my Toshiba M45-S335 and this drive is one hell of a problem..

It never works good, it writes faulty CD-R's at even 12x (supposed to write at 24x) and DVD-R is a joke, it is supposed to be 8x DVD-R/W but cannot write anthing above 2x at any given time.... Takes 16 minutes to write 126MB data to 8x supported DVD, at 2x !

Does anyone have a solution for this piece of junk which I got with my new toshiba laptop
