There are of course a variety of answers depending on budget and uses, but quantitative answers are hard to come by. With this review, we look to comprehensively test the majority of 2.5" hard drives available today. We have all of the current models from Seagate, Hitachi, Fujitsu, Western Digital, and Toshiba. Unfortunately we did not have time to sample any Samsung drives, but it appears their drives are limited to older 5400RPM models as it is. As new drives come out, we will add individual reviews that compare results with the ones obtained in this roundup. Now let's get down to the hard drives!"</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/deck.jpg" /><br /><br />Laptop Logic has posted a hard drive comparison that covers all of your bases if you're looking to upgrade in the near future. They cover 4200, 5400 and 7200RPM drive performance as well heat and acoustic levels in the article. They have really done quite a thorough job and I definitely recommend this article.

As usual a review that focuses only on the most expensive items in the market...

What do you mean? They covered 7200 RPM, 5400 RPM, and 4200 RPM drives...what should they have covered?

I was hoping to see some of the cheaper 40/60gb drives. For some manufacturers (I think Hitachi) they have different model numbers, since they use a different platter design. I would really liked to have seen some Samsung drives as well!

Well, as someone who knows how hard it can be to get products from manufacturers for review, the fact that they got nine is impresive.

I'm not aware of any SATA 2.5" laptop hard drives...do they exist?

I've had one since August.

Here's the one I have (http://www.fel.fujitsu.com/home/v3__product.asp?pid=383&amp;inf=dsc&amp;wg=15). It came in this (http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?lg=en&amp;section=1&amp;group=446&amp;product=4492&amp;category=).

Interesting - that's the first I've heard of it. I just got a new 17" Fujitsu laptop and it doesn't even have SATA. Given the results of SATA on the desktop where it has no advantage over IDE drives, I somehow doubt we'll see a rush to SATA in laptops for while, until there's some benefit to it.
