He talks about the speed increase, and this is something I saw first hand a few months back (which I think I can talk about now, in general terms at least): there was a laptop with 13,000 songs on it, and after a bit of hard drive grinding when WMP was loaded, WMP sat quietly. The user then began to search for new music, and WMP found it instantly - no hard drive grinding, no sluggish behaviour. It was a beautiful thing. I've been ripping on Windows Media Player for years because of it's horrific performance with large libraries, and it looks like they've finally come up with something that makes searching music fast.<br /><br />Paul goes on to cover new features, such as Windows Digital Gallery. He says it's based on Digital Image Suite 2006, which I'm not sure is a good thing - I found that program very sluggish at rendering thumbnails and it made my 3.2 Ghz laptop feel like it was running at 32mhz. Still, having improved imaging handling in Vista will be great. I'll probably still install Picasa though. ;-)<br /><br />Paul really blows a gasket when he covers the new Media Center user interface - I think the <a href="http://www.winsupersite.com/images/reviews/vista_ctp2_10.jpg">new UI is pretty slick</a>, but I also haven't seen it in action. I hope it's much faster at rendering album thumbnails, and caches them for faster overall access. Charlie makes some really good points. However, like you said, until I have a copy, it's hard to pass judgement. I would hazzard on the side of Charlie &amp; Microsoft. It's not very often that they make things harder to do. At least in my expereince, anyway. :)

I'm in your boat -- I think the interface is slick as well, though I guess with different people, mileage varies. I guess on the media side of things, I'm looking forward to some significant improvements in Windows Media Player 11, and from what I've read, Microsoft is certainly taking the right steps to improving it from a functional perspective, not just an aesthetic one.

Despite all the negative criticism floating around about Windows Vista, I'm certainly looking forward to the final release next year. :)

Welcome to iTunes circa 2003 (maybe 2002)! :)

I am a sucker for eye candy which is one of the reasons why I love the OS X GUI. However, Apple has a strict UI design guideline - not perfect but better than most.

It seems like Microsoft Windows team only recently discovered them and want to throw all of them in: transparency, shadows, 2D/3D accelerated effects, etc without thinking whether it makes sense or not.

I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder because I like the new Media Center interface better. It's more modern and artistic. And I don't begin to see why he calls the Media Player 11 interface 'beautiful'. I mean, it's fine. But it's just a standard Windows interface with a tree list on the side and a block of thumbnails running down the screen. Big deal. I think the real issue will be in the running of these. As Charlie points out, give me 4 clicks instead of 7 and 2 clicks instead of 4 any time.
