Over the other side of the Big Pond, Americans have been enjoying HDTV for a couple of years. But despite the Sky satellite service being the only broadcaster putting even a vague date on upgrading, widescreen TVs are arriving with HD playback abilities – and so are HD camcorders. Although JVC brought HD to the masses in the US with the GR-HD1, when that model arrived in the UK a couple of years ago it had mysteriously transformed into the GR-PD1, without the HD recording functionality. So Sony was the first to market in Europe, at the end of 2004, with the incredible HDR-FX1. Less than a year later, Sony is already more than halving the cost of HD entry with the HDR-HC1E."</i><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/00C717248B-D71B-A84C-D98E5B2580B73D14.jpg" /> <br /><br />Wow. The price of HD camcorders is dropping fast, with sub-$1000 camcorders expected by January. I'm considering buying two for my wedding, and just giving them to family and friends to capture several hours of candid footage in HD. I'd rather spend the money on two of these than a mediocre wedding videographer who shoots in VHS format!

This is the vidcam I'd like to buy next. Got great reviews as well.

I'm looking forward to when we'll have access to hi-def players and be able to burn hi-def content to DVD.

But of course as it stands now, this cam connected to a hi-def TV is the only way to see the content in all its glory - well, at least outside of a computer, anyway.

I'd just like to see the price drop more. $2000 is quite a chunk of change.

I'm going to burn my wedding footage in DVD format next Spring (480p), then burn it again in HD DVD when the technology matures. And for home viewing...I'll just burn it to a regular DVD in WMV HD format and play it on the Xbox 360. :D

That's true, that should be one way to view HD content outside of computer or camcorder. (Can't wait for the 360 :) ).
