The new drive will be available this month and will cost $65 per drive when purchased in quantities of 10,000 units, the company said in a statement. The Storage Element drives are designed to be installed in portable electronics devices such as digital music players. Components that are duplicated in the digital media player's main circuitry or not required are removed from the disks, which helps keep them small. This also helps cut costs but makes them proprietary designs, which means products have to be designed with the specific drives in mind."</i><br /><br />Interestingly, from a little digging in the <a href="http://www.corniceco.com/news/071805.html">press release</a>, it appears that they also only use one side of the platter to cut costs and reduce product size. We will probably be seeing these pop up in more and more devices as previous generations of this product are already in products from Archos, Garmin, Philips, Rio, Samsung, and Sony.

I don't know if Archos uses a Cornice drive for their new XS100, but its price is only marginally lower than a color screen fitted 5 GB Samsung YH-820 while only sporting 3 GB and a BW screen; the size is quite similar too: same thickness, one is slightly longer, the other slightly wider.

There is not enough price difference or enough capacity, or enough feature or enough size difference to make this solution attractive.
