The man spoke in tones that the grieving father said had momentarily quieted his anguish. The stranger, Rose soon learned, was Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple Computer, the company that makes the iPod."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/040107_Mini_Ipod_hd.hmedium.jpg" /><br /><br />This truly is a senseless tragedy. My heart goes out to the family of this boy whose only crime was having a small trinket that someone else was willing to kill for. I wouldn't be surprised if drugs are involved somehow. A lot of such thefts and robberies are committed so the perpetrators can then pawn the items and use the money to buy drugs.

Not that I think that Steve made the call as a PR move, but even so its a brilliant one. It really shows that Apple isn't just a corporation out to make money, and really cares about its customers.

I'm truely saddened for this boys family. It does go to show that those NYPD recommendations of not using white headphones had some merit.

That's sad. :-( I guess the iPod is the new "Nike sneaker" for this generation of kids, and they'll do anything to get one. :?

Good move by Jobs all the way around. It sounds like he really was moved by the tragedy.

Why are people attacking others over iPods now? Geez, the Apple site just posted offical refurbs...the 512 shuffle is at like $89 and the the 1 gig one is about $100. is that so far out of reach that someone has to die?

Well, as I said it may not have been a simple casing of killing someone for their iPod. I would bet money it's drug related. Crackheads will do anything for money to support their habbit. And the addiction will drive you to extreme measures. Happens all the time, just open your newspaper.

I suppose the attacker(s) could have been after the iPod simply to steal it, but I wouldn't be surprised if this were really about drug money.

I agree that it there was probably more than just the iPod. I could have been bullying. Could have been some kids hanging around looking for trouble.

Its not always an issue of being able to afford something. Sometimes its just they see something that they want and use force to get it.

I'm sure sociologists and psychologists could throw out a dozen or more theories. Including drugs.

I agree... senseless tragedy. But then again, how many of them do make sense...

My condolences to the family and friends.
