<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.apple.com/ipod/color/' target='_blank'>http://www.apple.com/ipod/color/</a><br /><br /></div><i>"AppleŽ today announced that the iPodŽ and iPod photo lines are merging, creating a single line of white iPods that all feature color displays with the ability to view album artwork, photos and play slideshows in stunning color. The simplified iPod lineup features a 20GB model, holding up to 5,000 songs priced at just $299 and a 60GB model, holding up to 15,000 songs priced at $399. Also starting today, iPods will offer an easy to use Podcast menu, including bookmarking within a Podcast and the ability to display Podcast artwork in color."</i><br /><img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/beautyshot_ipodphoto_050627.jpg" /><br /><br />Ok, so basically this isn't a product announcement, more like a repositioning of the brand. iPod + iPod Photo = iPod Color. Color me underwhelmed. One nice aspect to this announcement is the previous iPod Photo can now be had for $299. I paid $333 (via Amazon) just a few weeks ago.

For me this is one of those good news/bad news items.
The good news is that my brand new 60Gb iPod Photo is not oboslete.
The bad news is that there are no new iPods.
The other bad news is that I could have saved $50 on my iPod if I had waited  :D

Just surfed over to Apple's site and found that iTunes 4.9 and a new iPod update are available.
The most significant feature here, of course, is the integration of podcast software into iTunes and podcast management (bookmarking, etc) in the iPod update.

If they only supported some type of RAW format for their pictures, I'd grab one. I don't really listen to much music, although I probably would if I bought one, but the lack of RAW support (even basic embedded jpeg) kills the deal for me. It would be nice to have a portable 60GB in the form factor of the iPod.

Now Kent . . . I thought you said not to long ago that Apple should have color screens in all of their iPods? I like the addition of a color screen but still won't use one for showing pictures.
Does the color little screen really 65k of color?
I've just looked on apple iPod web page an animated gif of
what we see on the screen and the pictures shown look awfully bad.
Look like a 256 color pix.

The 256 colors are a limitation of the animated gif format and not the iPod- the iPod does display 65k colors- go check one out at a Best Buy or something, their screens really are quite nice.

New?
They probably have 4 more generations in their pockets.. But Apple is not what they used to be! They want to keep it and hide it real good, so they can release one by one, and get the money in their pocket.. I know some people bought the next gen ipod when it first came out, and now hitting their heads on the walls for not waiting..
There is no big difference, c'mon, why the hell would you wanna be looking at a tiny color screen, even pictures look crappy!
Listen to the music, don't look at the screen.. Money trap!
