As far as capacities go, Hitachi is in the lead at the moment with its recently announced 500GB drive. The Seagate 400GB Pushbutton Backup external hard drive might not be able to back up the Hitachi monster drive, but it should be ample for most of us."</i><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/images/seagate_usb.jpg" /> <br /><br />These backup USB drives are pretty nice. There really isn't any other way to back up big hard drives except to other big hard drives. Too bad, I'd love a better archival format, but this is much quicker than most other solutions.

I have the Seagate 300gb drive - I use it as a primary drive but I suppose the smarter thing would be to get a 300gb internal and then use the external as a backup as advertised ;-)

I just got a DL burner and am waiting for prices to come down on DL discs a bit more although it would still take 30+ DL DVD's to backup the drive.

I'm going to be in the market for an external back drive in the coming months. Currently I have a second PC setup that I backup to, but in the summer months it gets REALLY warm in my upstairs bedroom having two PCs running 24/7. The only problem is that this drive is a little pricey at the moment, but in a few months I'd expect it to go down a bit.

Check out sites like fatwallet or techbargains.com and wait for a good rebate deal. I got my 300 at CompUSA during a rebate period and got a really good price.
